THE DESIGN: “It’s a theatrical approach. After speaking with the artist (Laura Pergolizzi, whose stage name is LP) we decided to use the floor package to highlight the band and light the lead singer using more low angles for a more dramatic look to each song. The main statement piece was a backdrop treated with UV paint. The idea was to have a morning and evening concept with the backdrops, using UV fixtures for the evening look, giving a visual of a 3D forest.”

HOME BASE: San Diego, CA

IN THE INDUSTRY: Since 2006.

CAREER SPARK: “At 13, I saw Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell tour and fell in love with the idea of designing art with lights. I got involved doing anything related to lighting shows for local theaters and school events, until college, where I designed and programmed lighting for productions. I free-lanced during my junior year around San Francisco and, after graduation, started my first tour with Ringling Brothers. I knew designing and programming for concerts, corporate, exhibit and television was what I loved to do.”

FIRST INDUSTRY GIG: “At a club in San Francisco for New Monsoon. It was the first time I was asked to design a floor package for a show and had full design freedom. The experience was exhilarating; I learned a lot on that first job.”

HEROES/MENTORS: “I have had the pleasure of working with many other spectacular designers that I look up to such as Matt Firestone and Tim Sheldon, two who have always been there for me. Without Marc Brickman’s work, I probably wouldn’t be designing shows myself.”

OTHER ARTISTS OVER THE YEARS? “I had the pleasure of working with Meghan Trainor, Ice Cube, Warren G, Demi Lovato, Adam Levine, Psychedelic Furs, Lorde, Skylar Grey and Benise, to name a few.”

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY? “I enjoy the diversity of every show and working with other creative people to create art together.”

YOUR DREAM CONCERT TO LIGHT: “I secretly always wanted to design a Pink Floyd concert, mostly because they are the reason I got into the industry. It would be somewhat poetic to design for the very group that helped shape my career.”
