Companies such as Aadyn Tech and BB&S are dedicated to only making these type fixtures, while other large companies such as Philips Strand division make ample numbers of products designed for camera use along with other lighting fixtures designed for the live stage. Like many lighting designers, Matt Mills wanted to have more control over the followspots in his designs, and increased confidence in the consistency of their operation. Not happy with the varying levels of the followspots available at different venues, as well as with the inconsistency in experience of spot operators, Mills looked at the Follow-Me […] Read More...

Creating a storyline for a musical recording and translating its thematic elements to the stage isn’t a new phenomenon. For decades, rock musicians, from Hawkwind to Devo, have assumed faux-identities, constructed elaborate tales of fantasy and adventure, and transported us via hallucinogenic sojourns through the mists of time. Ohio-based hard rockers Starset carry on this […] Read More...

House of Cards might not seem the most likely place for a seed of an idea to germinate and revolutionize an industry. But that is exactly where PRG’s technologists, under the direction of Brian Edwards, PRG’s president of North America television and film sales, deployed the “immersion environment” and interactive lighting system cinematographer Claudio […] Read More...

A Technological Conglomeration Takes Europe By Storm A new arena spectacular is in production across Europe right now based on the very popular Fast and Furious franchise — a movie brand that has been more popular among one of the largest cross-sections of the population to date than many to come before it. As media server software crosses over from being a technical solution to being a creative tool, the software will take a more central role. Airplane rides make me write. I’m not sure what it is about the cramped quarters of the time machine/space tube, but I always feel the urge to pull out the old […] Read More...

LIVE Ultra Lounge has undergone two major upgrades since it originally opened in San Antonio, TX in April 2014. Owner Robert Cruzzi’s mission — to give Texas patrons a taste of Las Vegas without leaving their hometown — hasn’t really changed. But with brighter, sharper and easier-to-maintain screens and fixtures available, he’s been able to […] Read More...

LED tape has been a staple on live events for quite some time. It’s mostly known for its use as eye candy that adds dimension to set pieces and its ability to be mapped to video. But when it comes to using the product as an actual light source — to illuminate something — most […] Read More...

Does versatility inevitably entail compromise? Our conventional (pun intended) platitudes claim that it does: One can be a jack-of-all-trades, but in so doing will be a master of none. Against this backdrop, we have the promise of so-called hybrid fixtures: a promise of versatility — of being more than just a hard-edged spot, or a […] Read More...
