Robe has released their most powerful LED wash/effects fixture and it packs one heckuva beam from a large-scale pancake-faced fixture. They’ve managed to combine the technology they made available with last year’s Spiider fixture — with a fixture comparable in size to the LEDWash 1200. If you are looking for a large-scale beam of […] Read More...

Italian luminaire manufacturer DTS has released an incredible new LED moving head profile that quite frankly grabbed my attention; not only does it have a full feature set, but there are some innovations that have shown DTS as a real contender in the American market. ‡‡         The Light Source First and foremost, Synergy 5 profile […] Read More...

It’s two, two, two reviews in one! I was fortunate enough to get ahold of an ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel and ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K from Blackmagic Design, and it’s a good thing these siblings play well together. They have to, because you can’t really use either unless you have one or […] Read More...

Upon opening the Pelican that the demo unit arrived in, I didn’t notice anything particularly different on the outside from its relatives, the Taiga+ and the Boreal+. Measuring the same 4U rack size and dimensions (630x425x175 mm) and featuring the instantly recognizable LED-backlit Hippo face, the Montane+ seemed familiar enough. But the differences in the […] Read More...

When Ayrton first showed their version of an LED sourced hard edged yoke light at LDI, most people went, “Huh?” Our industry has grown to expect major advances in LED technology through the many unique new light fixtures Ayrton seems to invent every year. So why did they design and manufacture a fixture to compete […] Read More...

Perhaps the biggest news on the floor at this year’s Prolight + Sound show was the unveiling of the grandMA3 console, which will start shipping this summer. It was the most talked-about lighting product, and not only did they have a booth full of the desks for folks to get their hands on, there was […] Read More...

Does versatility inevitably entail compromise? Our conventional (pun intended) platitudes claim that it does: One can be a jack-of-all-trades, but in so doing will be a master of none. Against this backdrop, we have the promise of so-called hybrid fixtures: a promise of versatility — of being more than just a hard-edged spot, or a […] Read More...

The Pivot Cue 512 is a standalone lighting controller that can handle whatever fixtures you decide to patch, either via the onboard library of pre-included fixture profiles or by using the offline software to build your own profile to manufacturer’s specifications. The controller can handle up to 512 channels (one universe of DMX), but this […] Read More...

Automated framing shutters on moving lights were once not as common as they are today. The most popular framing-shutter fixture in existence is probably the venerable ellipsoidal reflector spotlight, but motorized framing shutters remained a somewhat uncommon feature on automated lights for many years. This month, I’m looking at the newest member of the High End Systems SolaFrame family, the SolaFrame 750, to see how its feature set stacks up in the world of framing shutter moving lights. It is, I think, uncontroversial to consider the VL3000 spot fixture as having a special place of prestige among intelligent fixtures. In that 1200-watt fixture Vari-Lite realized a truly excellent light, one that set the standard for the quality of its brightness, effects and optics, and it has been used extensively in entertainment lighting since its inception. It was, to understate things, a very usable intelligent light. Read More...

The ColorSource line from Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC), headquartered in Middleton, WI, includes fixtures, control and relay products.
