Does versatility inevitably entail compromise? Our conventional (pun intended) platitudes claim that it does: One can be a jack-of-all-trades, but in so doing will be a master of none. Against this backdrop, we have the promise of so-called hybrid fixtures: a promise of versatility — of being more than just a hard-edged spot, or a […] Read More...

The Pivot Cue 512 is a standalone lighting controller that can handle whatever fixtures you decide to patch, either via the onboard library of pre-included fixture profiles or by using the offline software to build your own profile to manufacturer’s specifications. The controller can handle up to 512 channels (one universe of DMX), but this […] Read More...

Automated framing shutters on moving lights were once not as common as they are today. The most popular framing-shutter fixture in existence is probably the venerable ellipsoidal reflector spotlight, but motorized framing shutters remained a somewhat uncommon feature on automated lights for many years. This month, I’m looking at the newest member of the High End Systems SolaFrame family, the SolaFrame 750, to see how its feature set stacks up in the world of framing shutter moving lights. It is, I think, uncontroversial to consider the VL3000 spot fixture as having a special place of prestige among intelligent fixtures. In that 1200-watt fixture Vari-Lite realized a truly excellent light, one that set the standard for the quality of its brightness, effects and optics, and it has been used extensively in entertainment lighting since its inception. It was, to understate things, a very usable intelligent light. Read More...

The ColorSource line from Electronic Theatre Controls (ETC), headquartered in Middleton, WI, includes fixtures, control and relay products. The fixture line consists of a spot, par, linear, and now, the newest addition, the ColorSource CYC wash light. Let us have a closer look at this luminaire (and see if that is actually a mirror). Video switchers are not sexy. At least the smaller frames. Let’s face it, in terms of sheer eye candy, small event video switchers take a back seat to their audio and lighting cousins.

It’s a general rule that the larger the console, the more bells and whistles and consequently more blinky lights and buttons. The smaller fare is basic because they tend to be more utility than glam. There’s only so much you can fit in a frame anyway.

I recently got a chance to test the Martin MAC Encore Performance fixtures from Harman, which are available in two versions — the WRM, or “warm” version, and CLD, or “cold” version. (As of last month’s LDI, Martin added the MAC Encore Wash, also in warm and cool versions, but here, I’ll just focus on the two versions of the MAC Encore Performance.) After playing with the Performance, I concluded that it is perfect for working with cameras.

“The Pointe was like taking the first beam fixtures manufactured and putting them on steroids.”

This was how the original Pointe was described to me before I used it. Now Robe has taken this fixture to the next level.

Blizzard Lighting is based in Waukesha, WI. I’m not sure where that is either, but it turns out it’s about 30 minutes west of Milwaukee. Blizzard Lighting is a newer company to the industry, but not as new as you may think. They have been manufacturing lights since March of 2010. In fact, their first LED moving light was called “Flurry Wash,” which certainly aligns with their theme of “cool” and “wintry.” Read More...
