Is there any pressure when you sign on to design the Halftime show at the Super Bowl? You are working on one of the highest-viewed televised sporting events in the U.S.; you want something that no one has ever seen before; you are working with the biggest names in music; and it all happens live in a 12-minute performance. Oh, and you have only eight-minutes to set it all up in front of 100,000 people.

There was once a lighting supplier who bought a case of 12 PAR lamps from the manufacturer for $200 and sold them for $15 each. Business was brisk. At the end of the month, the owner counted his money and found that he was a little short on cash. So he called a meeting of the entire company and explained the problem. "What are we going to do?" an employee asked. "Isn't it obvious?" the owner answered. "We're going to get a bigger warehouse."

Scenic and projection designer David Gallo thinks that the
vibrant rock musical Memphis is a
relatively simple show from a visual standpoint, but that that doesn't mean
that boundaries weren't pushed. The Broadway production, which includes a
variety of moving scenery, including an adjustable bridge, pillars that move
around the stage and a band that glides around the stage, is an energetic,
exciting spectacle.

In 1980, Sean "Motley" Hackett saw a Kiss concert and he was immediately hooked on the spectacle of it all. That was the moment he knew he wanted to be a roadie, or do whatever it took to be involved in big rock shows. The Australian eventually became the lighting designer for INXS and toured with them for many years.

Automated lighting consoles are filled with unique features to assist in the programming and organization of a show. Some consoles have exclusive features unavailable in other desks, but all consoles share many of the same principles and features as well. One feature that is commonly found on automated lighting consoles is called "groups."
