All my life I've been waiting for someone to build a flying car. It's kind of like waiting for Donald Trump to lose the rest of his hair; we're pretty sure it's going to happen, we just don't know when. Whether we're talking about the Donald's hair falling out or cars flying in, when it does happen it will be a big improvement but far too expected not to be anti-climactic.

Miami's Winter Music Conference, aimed at DJs, recording artists, producers, promoters, and anyone else plugged into the world of electronic music, got its start in the mid-1980s. In 1998, a companion event, the Ultra Music Festival, was born, staged on the sands of South Beach at the close of the conference.

Complete Production Systems, Inc. (CPS) recently provided a lighting rig consisting entirely of Chroma-Q Color Punch LED fixtures for the Odawa Casino Resort's O zone nightclub in Petoskey, Mich.

Billy Currington is hitting the road with a new lighting design courtesy of Chris Lisle Lighting Design. It's one of the first country acts to take out a completely "green" lighting rig, and also features the GRN Batten from Bandit Lites.

After selecting Coemar lighting fixtures for alternative/funk party band 311's 2008 and 2009 tours, lighting designer/director Joe Paradise once again chose a complement of Coemar Infinity XLs and ACLs for the band's 2010 311 Day Concert in Las Vegas.

gathering point for artists, singers, writers and intellectuals from all over
the Arab world. The 2010 event was televised by Alwatan Television Network in
Kuwait, airing Thursday and Friday nights for three weeks and streamed live on
the Internet.

The opening and closing soccer tournament ceremonies for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations, also known as the Orange Africa Cup of Nations, turned 11th November Stadium in Luanda, Angola into a visual representation of significant cultural and political events in Angola's recent history and its vision for the future. Robe moving lights played a key role.

Video and still projection technology has become an increasingly integral part of the professional theatre world, and its presence has become inescapable. But when it comes to materials that have been pre-assembled prior to a performance, a big challenge has emerged: What happens if one or more of your leading role performers happens to be out and the understudy takes over? It can be a bit of a problem, and one that can be a headache for the video crew.

Pro Light + Sound, Frankfurt, Germany, Europe's biggest and most prominent production industry-related trade show, has been gaining in prominence even while the economy has been in a funk. At this year's show there was a good buzz around the halls, suggesting that people were thinking about real business and not just kicking tires.

Recently, I commissioned a renovation project for Northern High School in Durham, N.C. The district had chosen to accept the option to use LED fixtures for their cyc lighting. While the specification only required an RGB fixture, the system integrator provided the new Altman Spectra Cyc 100.

Lighting is a team sport. Designing the lighting for any event is a process that depends on a number of variables and answers to a lot of questions. The questions must be answered by venue employees, electricians, rental inventory managers and many more. Clients depend on us for a spectacular show. But designers depend on everyone else's support.
