KANSAS CITY, MO — USITT has announced plans for Broadway-themed seminars prior to the start of the association’s Annual Conference & Stage Expo. The conference already has four days of workshops set for March 31-April 3. The Broadway seminars, a joint project with USITT fellow Sonny Sonnenfeld, are slated for March 29 and 30. There are three Broadway seminars: a two-day session on lighting featuring Nastasha Katz and Ken Billington; a two-day session on costume design featuring Tony Walton and William Ivey Long; and a one-day session (on March 30) on projection design with Howard Werner and Michael Clark.
The designers will share with seminar participants what they did in the theatre during their early years and then talk about what happened once they got the call from the producer, director, or company asking them to design the next big new musical. They will also discuss their creative processes, working methods with other design team members, and other aspects of working at the hub of American commercial theatre.
In addition to formal question and answer periods during the seminars, there will be an evening reception to provide seminar participants an informal opportunity to meet the designers individually.
