QUEBEC – Ambiances Lighting & Visual Design's Aurora Borealis, a lighting project that will be setting the façade of grain silos in the old port area of Quebec City aglow through 2013, is using fixtures from architectural lighting manufacturer Iluminarc.
The silo facades occupy a space that measures nearly 2,000 feet long and 100 feet high.
The project, inspired by the Northern Lights phenomenon, incorporates changes in color, movement and intensity. Its two creators, Robert Lepage and Martin Gagnon, have collaborated on previous artistic lighting projects such as The Image MillMC, Zulu Time and Elseneur.
Aurora Borealis involves more than 500 Iluminarc 48 IP LED fixtures, supplied through Iluminarc's Canadian dealer Erikson Pro. LED fixtures were specified for their low energy consumption, long life, low maintenance and reliability.
The complete installation consists of 574 LED spots in addition to the 1,000 variable white LED pixels, which are used to create a "starry night" effect over the south façade. The automated lighting system was created and installed by Ex Machina.
The city of Quebec is the main sponsor of the project. The project received financial aid from the Commission de la Capitale Nationale du Quebec.
