Besix Event Uses Compulite, Clay Paky Gear

BRUSSELS – Besix, a Belgian conglomerate, marked 100 years in business with a show designed by Luc Petit featuring some 70 dancers and acrobats. Tof Leuba, the show's programmer, used Compulite gear to control the Procon Belgium-supplied rig, which included an assortment of Clay Paky and Vari-Lite light fixture along with Robert Juliat followspots. "I patched all the fixtures with one Vector during the setup, and then I connected the second vector as a Node to get the same patch," Leuba said, adding, "I programmed the ePorts using Compulite Cnet Manager Software to name and program their IP and DMX Port each one will distribute.

"I split the DMX universes between the two vectors using the DMX protocol in the Vector to send only eight ports each. The two vectors were connected together with a hub that transmitted VC (Ethernet to DMX) to two different ePort in two locations: one at dimmer city and one in the middle of stage" for floor fixtures. "It took two days of setup and two more days of rehearsals and programming.

Leuba, who has worked with Compulite for more than 15 years, credited the Vector for being "easy to patch" and "easy to change the devices when needed." The console, he added, allows for "very quick and intuitive programming of the show. It's easy to update a range of cues with special values in the editor and very easy and cool to access fixture using the "Desktop feature" when it's used as Topo."

Besix's businesses include a core emphasis on construction, engineering and real estate. The company, for example, served as a subcontractor on the five-year construction of Burj Khalifa, currently the tallest building in the world, which opened this month.

More than 1,000 people attended Besix's 100-year anniversary event, held at the Palais 5 Expo Bruxelles Expo Area.
