Lighting for Marina Bay Sands Resort Grand Opening Relied on W-DMX

SINGAPORE – Showtec Communications Pte Ltd. relied on W-DMX technology from Wireless Solution Sweden AB to control the lighting gear it provided for the grand opening of the Marina Bay Sands Resort & Casino. Fourteen W-DMX Wireless DMX Universes of BlackBox Transmitters and Receivers Systems coordinated with an outdoor parabolic 21db dish to transmit signals for all the lighting controls used for the gala event.

Wireless Solution Sweden AB credited its Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) and Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technologies for W-DMX's ability to provide interference-free control, even at long distances.

Showtec, an equipment rental, sales and distribution company based in Singapore, worked for more than six months with Laser Vision, which engaged lighting designer Colin Baldwin, to plan the entire project.

"Preparation and simulated lighting effects testing were conducted in an unfinished building," said Henry Ang, Showtec's founder, "so access to various locations" at the resort and casino "was a challenge."

The W-DMX gear was used to link long distances – the lighting controls and consoles for the grand opening had to be positioned about 1.5 to 2 kilometers across Marina Bay from the new resort and casino in a suite in the Fullerton Hotel.

"We chose W-DMX as an assured mode of transmission for all control signals from that location to Marina Bay Sands," said Ang.   "The W-DMX system was very reliable and powerful, yet simple to configure and use."

Among the equipment supplied by Showtec for the grand opening were 14 DTS XR3000s, 18 DTS Arc 1200s, 10 Alpha One 7Ks, eight Syncrolite 7Ks, 10 Syncrolite 5Ks, a Strong 10K Britelight and six Anolis Arc Pad Xtremes.  A full-size grandMA 2 served as the lighting controller.
