LOS ANGELES — The 2011 BET Awards, held June 26 in Los Angeles, featured pyrotechnics and laser effects for several performing acts provided by Pyrotek Special Effects and its sister company Laser Design Productions. The show was televised from the Shrine Auditorium to a TV audience of 7.7 million.
Pyrotek’s array of pyro and smoke effects including low lying fog for Trey Songz, a gerb waterfall for Mary J. Blige, and seven-foot dragon tails for Rick Ross’s performance of “Aston Martin Music.”
Lorenzo Cornacchia, president and designer for Pyrotek Special Effects along with crew chief Bob Ross and pyro crew Hans Lundberg and Rob Liciso worked with Cossette Productions, production designer Brian Stonestreet and show producer Jesse Collins.
Laser Design Productions provided laser effects for DJ Khaled, Drake, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross. Three 25W full-color lasers filled the auditorium with a range of effects including morphing scans, fan blades and beam looks, as well as pan and scan effects.
Laser Design Productions’ Victor Tomei (operations manager) worked with laser operator Eric Taylor to place the lasers upstage center and stage left and right. Each artist entered the stage accompanied by a silhouette effect, lighting them from behind, and the laser show ran for the duration of the performances.
