Selena Gomez Tour Lit Like an Arena-Sized Dance Party

LAS VEGAS — For the We Own the Night tour, designers Seth Jackson, Brian Jenkins and video director Brent Sandrock sought to provide Selena Gomez fans with something akin to an arena-sized dance party. Lighting company Bandit Lites, meanwhile, sought to avoid trashing the planet while doing it.

Bandit provided 29 GLP Volkslicht LEDs, 24 Martin MAC 2000 Profiles, 17 Vari*Lite VL2500 Spots, 9 Martin Atomic Strobes and 23 of its own Bandit GRN LED battens, with a grandMA console for control.

The video package from Screenworks included 128 Lighthouse 12mm panels with Tait Touring Frames, two Sony HX300 cameras, three remote robocams and another grandMA for video control.

The compact size of the Volkslichts helped solve fixture placement challenges — they hang under the LED walls and are also used as uplights across the stage curtain; and they proved bright enough to allow the designers to do more with a smaller fixture count.

“The brightness is tremendous,” Jackson said. “They hold their own against the arc lamps and even the LED surfaces.”

Jenkins also credited the fixtures for their speed, noting, “more times than not, I will delay the Volkslicht’s parameters a bit so they’re in harmony with the other moving lights in the rig.”
