LOS ANGELES — LD Demfis Fyssicopulos, 41, died April 23 while surfing. He is survived by a daughter, Onna, and sister, Kati. Fyssicopulos, who also served as a production designer and artistic director, made his mark with the distinctive lighting design that accompanied the “M”-shaped stage featured on the 2013 leg of Maroon 5’s Overexposed tour. Other standout projects included his design for Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg at Coachella 2012, which included the hologram-like appearance of Tupac Shakur.
Fyssicopulos also designed and programmed looks for artists including Prince, Black Eyed Peas and Jon Secada, and in the years he spent working as a programmer, he executed looks for some of the top LDs in the industry.
Fyssicopulos outlined his design philosophy to Debi Moen in advance of the Maroon 5 tour last year for PLSN’s first “On the Road” feature, printed in the Jan. 2013 issue. “I embrace forward thinking,” he noted. “I don’t like the ‘institution’ and ‘establishment.’ I like to be ground-breaking… Stagnancy is the enemy.”
