CROFTON, MD — Humdinger Productions, based here, has designed, delivered and is touring with an integrated lighting rig and set for the Spring 2014 Campus Consciousness Tour, headlined by the band, Capital Cities (known for hit song “Safe and Sound.”)

More details from Humdinger Productions (www.humdingerenterprise.com):

The band’s wide musical range and catchy hooks inspire a visual aesthetic that is equal parts vaudeville theater, rock-n-roll, and rave.

Lighting for the tour was built up in a series of layers, each visually interesting on its own but also suitable to be combined to create a wide variety of different looks. Pre-rigged custom ‘pods’ flanking the stage provided powerful sidelight looks, using a combination of Elation LED fixtures and Martin Atomic strobes. Elation Platinum Beam 5R’s arrayed on top of the ‘pods’ and on deck provided big aerial beam looks, while more Elation LED’s – both moving-heads and fixed PAR’s – handled backlight duties. The front truss featured Martin MAC Aura’s and Elation Platinum Spot 5R’s for frontlight, with the Spot 5R’s also being used to paint the backdrop with gobos in some songs. An Avolites Tiger Touch ran the entire rig, and the wireless DMX built into the Elation fixtures was used to control all of the fixtures on the stage.

By using primarily LED fixtures and Elation Platinum 5R series fixtures, the entire rig weighed less, made efficient use of power, loaded-in quickly, and fit in a single truck along with the tour audio rig.

The signature set piece for the tour was a set of four pleated drape columns, which hung from the back truss; each is up-lit internally with a pair of Elation four-color LED PAR’s. This final visual layer became the starting point for each songs look, with the columns lit in varying shades of pastels to create the feel of a grand old building, or chasing at high speed through saturated colors like glow-sticks at a rave party. Humdinger Productions’ Dan Hoffman is the lighting designer and operator for the tour.
