CHICAGO — A concert attendee died May 22 after falling six to eight feet onto organ pipes during a performance by alt-metal band Chevelle at the Aragon Ballroom. Kyle W. Kirchhoff, 24, was pronounced dead after sustaining severe chest injuries from the fall. He had reportedly stepping off a catwalk onto a portion of ceiling before falling through and landing on the pipes.
“We were asked by police to stop our set so that the authorities could tend to an injured fan,” noted the band, on its Facebook pages. “Once the severity of the accident was determined, the authorities cleared out the venue to give them time to investigate.
“We want to thank our Chicago fans for their respect of the authorities and for understanding,” the Facebook post continued. Kirchhoff, who had played college football and had begun a coaching career at the College of DuPage, died shortly after the accident, which took place at 10:20 p.m.
