Crowded Wooden Pier Collapses During Music Festival in Spain; Over 300 Injured

VIGO, Spain – A 30-meter section of a crowded wooden pier gave way during a music festival in the coastal city of Vigo in northwest Spain on Aug. 12, sending hundreds of spectators, many of them teens, tumbling into the water. More than 300 were treated for injuries ranging from scrapes and bruises to broken arms and legs. No fatalities were reported.

The incident took place close to midnight on the last night of a three-day “O Marisquiño” music festival while urban hip-hop artist Daniel Vidal, a.k.a. Rels B, performed. Five of the injured were reported to be in serious condition. First responders include police and paramedics. Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.

The “O Marisquiño” music festival, now in its 18th year, drew a reported 160,000, according to reports, mostly from Spain and nearby Portugal but also from countries as far away as Venezuela, the U.S. and Germany. Along with music, the festival features extreme sports and dancing exhibitions.
