Chevelle is out on the road co-headlining a tour with Three Days Grace. The creative direction and production design by So Midwest’s Robb Jibson and Connor Sullivan include one of the first uses of a new Absen LED video product—the Jupiter Pro JP8 Pro—in a carbon fiber touring frame with a high transparency of 50%. The design team deployed the JP8 panels on three columns on stage, taking advantage of the transparency to layer over lights and an upstage LED wall of Absen Venus VN4.8, also in carbon fiber touring frames. The video and lighting gear for the tour was supplied by Chicago, IL-based LEC Event Technology.

Designer Perspective

Jibson talks about how he deployed the Absen JP8 panels onto three columns that broke his video content up across the columns. This was all backed by a wall of Absen VN4.8 panels. “The band doesn’t want narrative video content; they want shapes, patterns, and motion. It’s left more to the imagination. We had the LED frames built into three columns that had an angle and tilt to them, which we then angled sideways for better sightlines. When we looked at the LED panels in 3D models, no matter which way you looked, your brain was putting the image back together. So, even though we were physically distorting the image, it was coming back together for the audience, which I thought was really f**king cool! Because we layered the 4.8mm LED wall behind the LED columns we’re getting this parallax of movement. Even though there are framing members in the way, you just see the image.”

No matter where the audience is seated in the venue, they all get unique views of the video content. “Because the side pods are turned 25°, people on the sides in amphitheaters with extreme sight lines are getting a front-on view,” continues Jibson. “The Absen products have great viewing angles, like 160°, but with our angling them, the audience is getting an even better look at them. The JP8 panels have really good transparency; the blades are just smaller than other transparent LED products. Just turning these panels on in white even looks cool. We get a bunch of cool framing looks out of the design.”

A Closer Look at the Absen Jupiter Pro JP8 Pro LED Video Panel

Features of the lightweight and highly transparent Absen JP Pro include 8.9mm horizontal and vertical pixel pitches, 50% transparency, 4,000NITS brightness, 16-bit grayscale, 3,840Hz high refresh rate, and an IP65 rating for a high level of dust and moisture protection.

The JP8 comes in a larger size—a 1,000mm x 1,000mm panel size, each weighing in at 41.89 lbs. (19Kg). The high-strength composite structure is composed of carbon fiber tubes and die-cast aluminum parts, which makes the panel more durable. From a safety perspective, the JP Pro panels include a sturdy locking system with feedback mechanism to ensure flatness and make outdoor use safer. Its foldable wind-bracing system—available on the JP Pro series and VN series—weighs only 5.6Kg/pc. Once the panels are assembled, and the wind bracing is in place, the wall has a stronger wind-load resistance capability. The JP Pro can be curved—from -10° convex to +15° concave, 5° per unit. The 6-in-1 dolly system supports two-layer stacking and can transport 1,000mm hanging bars.
