Dave Matthews Out for Cross-Country Summer Swing

LOS ANGELES – The Dave Matthews Band hits the road for an extensive national tour with Clay Paky lighting, grandMA2 consoles and MDG foggers along for the ride.  The band started its 45-date cross-country swing in mid-May and wraps after Labor Day.  Theatrical Media Services is providing the lighting gear and consoles for design company and video vendor Filiment Productions.  Fenton Williams is the longtime production designer and lighting designer; Aaron Stinebrink is the lighting programmer and designer.

Vivid is the winter festival of light, music and ideas, held around the harbor in Sydney, Australia; for 2013, it ran from May 24-June 10. Winter down under is surprisingly scheduled when it is summer in the USA. Vivid came about in the dying days of the previous state government, and was such a success that it has returned each year, bigger and brighter. It brings people to the city in the down season.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Christie unveils the Christie InControl projector mobile app for applicable iOS devices. The Christie InControl APP is aimed at rental and staging customers using Christie 3-chip DLP M Series and J Series projectors. The App provides a responsive user interface to commonly used projector functionality, such as power on/off, shutter control, test pattern selection, and lens zoom and focus, in addition to more advanced projector functionality like 2D keystone and color management. Christie InControl will be available globally as a free download from the Apple App Store later this month.

More than 10,000 Free ANSI Standards Downloaded

NEW YORK, NY – More than 10,000 standards have been downloaded since April, when PLASA and ProSight Specialty Insurance announced their partnership to make PLASA’s American National Standards available to the industry free of charge as part of an effort to boost industry knowledge and safety. Among the most popular: ANSI E1.2, relating to aluminum truss and towers; ANSI E1.4, on counterweight rigging systems; ANSI E1.1, on wire rope ladders; and ANSI E1.6-1, on powered hoist systems.

Every year in the spring, the worldwide broadcasting and post-production community gets together at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) convention in Las Vegas. The show has become a remarkable incubator of audio and video technology, and this year was no different — with thousands of exhibitors and over 90,000 attendees from 155 countries.
At NAB, I’m always on the lookout for something different — a new technology or a new production tool that’s destined to change the way we work, and possibly change the way that content is created. This year, it wasn’t an “app” or a software program, or even a new 4K camera. In fact, this year — it had rotors.

One Stage, Many Disciplines: Multimedia Convergence

When I was in high school, like many of us, I was in the AV club and did lighting for all of the school shows. I guess that would have been my first exposure to convergence. The idea of using multiple disciplines of technology to create an onstage experience started back in 1988 for me. Even then, we were attempting to use slide projectors for some of the images in our shows (pretty high tech for a school in a town with only one traffic light).
