Rose Brand and USITT Host Design Action Competition

SECAUCUS, NJ – Rose Brand is now accepting applications for students wishing to compete in the Design Action Competition at this year’s USITT Conference, to be held March 28-31 in Long Beach, CA. The competition will consist of up to four different teams of students competing against each other to create the best scenic environment.  Teams will consist of a student scenic designer, technical director, lighting designer and a costume designer. They will be given a 10’ x 10’ space and 3.5 hours within to work. The deadline for applying is March 1.

Clay Paky Sharpys Light Up Hollydazzle

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — The 2011 edition of Hollydazzle, an annual lighting and fireworks show staged at Newport News’ City Center at Oyster Point, featured a 45-foot-high LED Christmas tree, a fireworks display and light effects from 20 of Clay Paky’s Sharpy light fixtures supplied by Main Light Industries, Wilmington, DE. The Sharpys swept across the five-acre fountain where the fireworks originated and shot their beams into the sky to the accompaniment of holiday music and the pyrotechnics.

WALLINGFORD, CT – The Angus Bowmer Theatre at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) in Ashland has taken delivery of three Robert Juliat Lucy 1200W HMI followspots from Musson Theatrical, Inc. of Santa Clara, CA.  The fixtures were chosen for their compact size and ability to fit into the theatre, which typically doesn’t accommodate followspots. They’ll debut in the February performance of “Animal Crackers.”

Robe MMXs Join Slovakian Legends of Pop

CZECH REPUBLIC – Slovakian rental company Q-99 supplied 50 Robe moving lights including Robe MMX Spots to LD Martin Kubanka for “Slovakian Legends of Pop.” The TV music series airs during a nine-week run on prime time national TV channel STV1. Taking the LED-oriented set design by Michael Brna as a starting point, Kubanka needed some seriously powerful light sources on the rig to hold their own amidst all the LEDs.

The event at Sadler’s Wells Theatre featured an international line-up of dancers, whose performances required lighting to accommodate with shuttering and gobos.
