Tree Lighting Ceremonies Feature Live Performances, LED Luster

NEW YORK, WASHINGTON, DC and LOS ANGLELES — The 2011 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, held Nov. 30 and broadcast live on NBC, has come a long way since workers at the office complex first pulled out the ladders and plugged in the lights in 1931. (The first ceremony took place two years later.) This year’s tree, a 74-foot spruce from Mifflinville, PA, featured 30,000 sparkling LED lights powered via 5 miles of cabling and topped by a six-sided, 9.5-foot-diameter, 550-lb. star made with 25,000 Swarovski crystals. The star itself was lit with 720 LEDs.

Enttec Pty Ltd’s D-PRO software-based lighting controller, created through a collaboration between Enttec and db Audioware on DMXIS (D-PRO is actually DMXIS-PRO for short), effectively turns computers into lighting consoles, in command-line mode or with a touch screen. Using an app like iDisplay, D-PRO’s Show Control window can run on an iPad. A version of D-PRO is now available for the Datagate MK2 — Enttec’s Ethernet-DMX networking tool. Along with support for a wide range of cues, palettes and groups, D-PRO offers a multi-layered cuelist playback engine, scripting and effects and other new features. D-PRO works natively in both Mac and Windows environments. The introductory price is $299 for eight universes of DMX output.
