Philips Strand Lighting Donates Equipment to Rising Stars in South Africa

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA – One of South Africa's biggest stage equipment distributors is supporting the lighting designers of the future by donating a Philips Strand Lighting 200 Plus lighting console to a local lighting school. DWR Distribution, which has been the exclusive South African distributor for Philips Entertainment brands Selecon and Strand Lighting since December 2010, made the generous gift to the Moonbox Theatre – a 40-seater venue and lighting laboratory at the Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria.

Loss of $1 Million Video Wall on John Mayer Tour Covered by Specialty Insurance

BURBANK, CA – Chaos Visual Productions provided video support for 10 touring productions last summer. One of the largest, the John Mayer Battle Studies Tour, traveled with a 50-by-20-foot LED video wall comprised of 45 Martin LC 2140 panels, designed for indoor use. The tour performed 122 shows in 331 days in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.  For a late July performance, Chaos set up the wall in an outdoor venue. Although the weather had been clear and sunny, it suddenly turned, and a monsoon-like squall swept through, completely destroying the video wall.

SAN ANTONIO, TX – Rodney Smith, CFE, who had been executive director of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, died March 27 from an apparent heart attack. He was 58. Smith played a key role for the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM), leading its Performing Arts Committee.

Scenex Lighting IP55 Flexible LED Strips

GLP Inc.'s Scenex Lighting has added flexible LED tapes for installation in set pieces or architectural elements. All have an IP 55 rating for outdoor and indoor use and 3M adhesive backing, and each tape can be cut at 2-inch intervals. Color options include tricolor RGB LEDs, white LEDs at 3200K or 6500K, and a variety of single colors.
