TEMPE, AZ – LD John Garberson used Chauvet Professional fixtures to light the musicians performing in triple digit temperatures prior to the annual fireworks display as part of Tempe’s Town Lake Festival. WUPPERTAL, Germany – The German-Israeli co-production St Matthew’s Passion 2727 is a dance oratorio choreographed by Tamir Ginz for the Kamea Dance Company, inspired by the St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) by Johann Sebastian Bach. The show is produced by Bayer Arts & Culture and a co-operation between two opera houses in Leverkusen and Wuppertal in Germany and Beer-Sheva Performing Arts center in Israel. Automated lighting programmers must be very skilled at programming for various types of productions and designers. In most cases, there is a great collaborative working relationship that allows the programmer to share in the creative vision along with the LD. However, there are some shows and LDs that require the programmer to simply enter data into the desk without regard to the end result on stage. In many cases this will occur in theatrical environments, but it could also occur as part of a programming session with any production. It is very important for programmers to be ready to switch to a working format that is purely data entry.

Lighting designer Martin Thomas and LD Don Weeks joined creative forces on the production design for the Yestival tour featuring Yes, Todd Rundgren and Carl Palmer’s ELP Experience. For Rundgren’s digital media content, Thomas literally sought graphic art services in-house — from his 17-year-old son, Avery. “My youngest son Avery has been doing digital graphic art for a couple of years now,” says Thomas, “and I found many of his pieces worked well with Todd’s music. Lots of compliments from the audience and the press about the look of the show; a lot of it was because of his art.”

LOS ANGELES – LD Butch Allen included Martin Axiom Hybrid fixtures in his lighting design for Eric Church’s “Holdin’ My Own” tour. Allen’s goal for the 65-date tour was to create a lighting rig that could translate the up-close-and-personal vibe of a small club performance to a massive arena setting. Allen and Christie Lites came up with a truss structure capable of flying Axiom Hybrid fixtures almost 80 feet in the air – well out of the audiences’ line of sight.
