SANTIAGO, Chile – On May 22, 2,357 soccer players (most of them amateurs) played a match that lasted 120 hours, a feat topping the official Guinness record of 105 continuous hours that had been set last year in Scotland. (The new record, at presstime, had not yet been confirmed by Guinness officials). The teams were reportedly divided into “blue” and “white” teams, with white beating blue by a score of 505 to 504. MLB hired Toronto-based BaAM Productions to construct a temporary 12,500-seat ballpark on an abandoned golf course at Fort Bragg, which was the setting for the July 3 game between the Atlanta Braves and Florida Marlins. The Salute-the-Troops game is believed to be the first regular-season Major League game ever played at a military installation.
