ARAM Provides Clay Paky, Other Fixtures for Intel Extreme Masters Event in Poland
KATOWICE, Poland – Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) Katowice 2016 was a sold-out, multi-day gaming event held in March. It was seen by 10,000 fans at the Spodek arena and millions more worldwide. ARAM worked with ESL on the event, providing visual support for the main stage, other stages and trade fair booths. ARAM provided more than 1000 light fixtures including Clay Paky Mythos, Sharpy and Super Sharpy moving lights along with LED screens and curtains and HDX and HDF Barco projectors.

JOHANNESBURG – LD Robert Hoey used Vari*Lite VL4000 Spot and VL4000 BeamWash fixtures for South Africa’s Naledi Theater Awards this year. The ceremony took place at the Lyric Theater in Johannesburg’s Gold Reef City amusement park. The Awards, which have been running for 12 years, honor excellence in the performing arts. They also aim to raise the profile of live theater in South Africa. Hoey had to ensure the ceremony was perfectly lit for broadcast, so positioned the VL4000 Spots in a Front of House position for maximum cover.

DUBAI – Production Technology LLC (Protec) receive an award for ‘Best Use of Event Technology’ from Informa Exhibitions, organizers of the Middle East EVENT Awards. Protec was honored for a fusion of artistry and technical precision: an industrial robot gracefully sketching the finer features of Jimi Hendrix. Staged at the Joharah Ballroom in Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai, Informa Exhibitions also engaged the services of Protec to support the award show.

LONDON – Riders are revving up to participate in the 2016 First Night Riders ‘Magical Mystery’ charity motorbike and classic car ride, visiting theatres across the country to raise money and awareness for The Theatrical Guild (TTG). This year’s tour, organized by Triple E’s David and Brenda Edelstein on TTG’s behalf, will hit the road between July 7-11, staying within 100 miles of central London. Triple E provides track systems and custom designed equipment for use in the entertainment industry.

MANCHESTER, U.K. – Adlib supplied lighting equipment and crew for the recent tour by UK rock band James who played a mix of UK arenas, academies and city hall venues in support of the band’s album, Girl At The End of the World, which was released in March. LD Chris Montrie worked with lighting crew chief Ben Hodgkins on a rig that included 16 Martin MAC Viper Profiles, eight MAC Viper Washes, 20 MAC Quantum LED washes, 16 Clay Paky Mythos and seven ETC Source Four profiles provided key lighting and specials, fitted with 26 degree lenses.

AARSCHOT, Belgium – LD Kristof van Mensel, part of the design and programming collective, TCF bvba (The Creative Factory), used close to 150 Robe fixtures to light Scala & Kolacny Brothers at the Stadsfeesthall in Aarschot. Scala & Kolacny Brothers, a Belgian women’s choir conducted by Stijn Kolacny with arrangements and piano accompaniment by Steven Kolacny, are performing a series of 20th anniversary concerts this year. The 750-capacity Stadsfeesthall is where they got their start.

I had the privilege of attending a road show last month. Not a traveling theatrical spectacle, but one put on by a popular lighting manufacturer that enabled quite a lot of people to get hands on experience with the latest technology. Harman’s Martin Lighting division took their gear to the people and extended me an invitation. With my schedule, I chose to take a trip to their stop in Dallas, Texas in May, one of the first destinations on their nationwide trek.
Read More »‘She Loves Me:’ David Rockwell Serves Up Old World Flavor with Modern Flair
It is customary for Broadway audiences to applaud for the stars of shows when they make their first entrance onstage for the night, but it is less often that a set actually earns the same response. David Rockwell’s dazzling, stage-spanning interior of Maraczek’s Perfumery in the current revival of She Loves Me — a comedic musical about two bickering retail employees (Zachary Levi and Laura Benanti) who do not realize they are anonymously amorous pen pals — is one such set piece found worthy of such adulation, and for good reason. The two-story location — complete with multiple shelves containing 150 perfume bottles, three counters, and a staircase — really makes the cast and audience alike feel as though they are visiting an upscale establishment from 1934 Budapest, the time and place of the story.
