VTM TV Marks 25 Years, Son et Lumiere Gets Assist from LD Luc Peumans

NIEUWPOORT, Belgium — Belgian commercial TV channel VTM (Vlaamse Televisie Maatschappij) marked 25 years with a son et lumière spectacular staged on the beach here. The event, which drew 17,000, was lit with Robe Pointes and LEDWash 1200s, Vari*Lite VL3500 Washes, Clay Paky Alpha Profile 1500s and four 25W RGBW lasers. A variety of other LED RGB PARs and wireless DMX-controlled Drome LED lights were also controlled via a grandMA2 console for control. Phlippo Showlights provided gear to support the lighting design from Luc Peumans, with lighting design firm Painting with Light.

LAS VEGAS — When LD, educator and USITT regional chair Don Childs founded the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas in 2006 with wife and partner Jane Childs, the primary motivation wasn’t a quick financial jackpot. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the organization endured years of red ink after its launch. But the intensive, eight-week summer program, which continues to operate under Jane Childs’ leadership after Don Childs’ death in late 2011, is rich in other respects, drawing support from well-known faculty members and top production companies and manufacturers.

M’era Luna Festival Features Covenant, Lit with SGM Gear

HILDESHEIM, Germany – The annual M’era Luna Festival, staged Aug. 9 at a former British Army airbase here, featured its usual mix of goth, metal and industrial music with headliners including Marilyn Manson, Paradise Lost and In Extremo. But this year’s lineup also included Covenant, an electronic dance band from Sweden, into the lineup. LD Stephan Aue and lighting operator Rico Münzer used LED gear from SGM to light the group’s synth-pop stylings.

LISBON, Portugal — Rock in Rio may have gotten its start in Rio, with festivals staged there in 1985, 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2013, but the music festival has been able to successfully export its event overseas, with six events in Lisbon, Portugal (2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014) and three in Madrid, Spain (2008, 2010 and 2012). A 2015 event is set for the U.S. (Las Vegas).
