Scapin Staging Acquires Show Distribution, Expands into U.S./Eastern Canada

MONTREAL — In a move that doubles its employee count and paves its way into the U.S. and eastern Canada, Scapin Staging, based here, has acquired Show Distribution in Quebec City. Robert Bélanger (pictured left) returns to Show Distribution as senior account manager. Marc Desrochers, Scapin Staging’s president, is pictured right. Scapin also named Mathieu Cecil account manager and Rhonda Holmes sales representative in Toronto.

PHOENIX — Bill O’Neil, a freelance lighting designer based in the Phoenix area, died recently. His career in lighting spanned 34 years. O’Neil got his start in the business as a freelance lighting professional in Jan. 1980. From Dec. 1995 to Jan. 2008, he served as a lighting designer/director and project manager/technical director for Swank Audio Visuals. O’Neil had been working as a freelance lighting designer since Jan. 2008, working often with Precise Corporate Staging, among others.

Robe Launches New Asia Pacific Operation

SINGAPORE — Robe Lighting s.r.o. opened a new Asia Pacific office here Jan. 17, 2014 called Robe Asia Pacific (RAP). It is led by Edwwerth Lai, Robe’s sales director for Asia, and Desmond Kwan, technical operations director. Dhora Shukor will manage the office. Robe Asia Pacific follows the opening of a new Robe Middle East office and operation in Dubai in Nov. 2013. Robe will continue to work with Lighting & Sound Distribution represented by Louis Teo and Brenda Keung as preferred partners for Singapore.

Amos Lee Tours with Bandit Lites

NASHVILLE – American singer-songwriter Amos Lee has been on the road promoting his fifth studio album, Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song, with a lighting package provided by Bandit Lites. The tour began September 21 in New York and wrapped its first leg November 30 in Knoxville, TN. Lighting designer Morgan Leek wanted to illuminate the folk artist by “creating a classic feeling show: clean, minimal and refined.”

NEW YORK — Two PLASA standards up for revision are posted for public review — BSR E1.17-201x, Architecture for Control Networks, EPI 19, ACN Discovery on IP Networks, which is a revision of ANSI E1.17-2008, Entertainment Technology -Architecture for Control Networks (ACN); and BSR E1.19 – 201x, Recommended Practice for the Use of Class A Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) Intended for Personnel Protection in the Entertainment Industry. They will be available for review through March 3.

NEW YORK — On Jan. 1, Bill de Blasio took over for Michael Bloomberg as Mayor of New York City. As part of the process of welcoming the first new mayor since Bloomberg took over for Rudy Giuliani in 2002, a non-partisan citywide project, “Talking Transition,” invited New Yorkers to share their views about the city’s future. The project was based within a temporary tent-like complex at Hudson Square at Canal and Varick Streets in Manhattan. WorldStage supported the temporary location’s lighting needs.
