CROATIA – The Spaladium Arena in the stunning Croatian coastal town of Split was the venue for the 2017 Porin Music Awards (AKA ‘the Porins’), a glamourous, high profile evening which honors the achievements and talent of Croatian artists across a diverse mix of genres and 30 categories and is broadcast live on the national HRT network. Lighting designer for this year was HRT’s Marko Foretić who chose to work with a moving light rig of over 160 Robe fixtures, supplied by one of the leading Croatian rental companies, Promologistika. I think that a picture was worth a thousand words. But I think a picture is often worth 100 lights as well. As video has become a staple in concerts, we see lights being used to augment the big look of a big screen and gosh — be used to just light the money. The need for more original designs using video tiles is common. Designers need fresh ideas. With all the productions we cover this month, it’s clearly evident that different minds do not always think alike.
