Show Report: Prolight + Sound 2014

The 2014 edition of Prolight + Sound finished strong after four days on March 15, with 897 exhibitors from 42 countries on par with stats from the 2013 event (901 from 41 countries) despite the 2014 event’s month-earlier time frame. Combined with Musikmesse, there were a total 2,242 exhibitors from 57 countries, with a total 110,000 visitors from 142 countries. PL+S/Musikmesse once again featured a wide array of conferences, presentations and workshops and informal networking opportunities for the live events industry. But for me, the main focus — not just for this show report, but also for the online postings and videos at www.plsn.com/tv, www.prolightingspace.com, www.youtube.com/plsntv and www.twitter.com/plsnmagazine — was to check out all the new and upgraded product developments for our industry. Selador Developers Surprise USITT with $20,000 Gift

FORT WORTH — Two 2001 recipients of a research grant from USITT recently gave back not only the $10,000 they originally received, but another $10,000 to help others going forward. Novella Smith and Robert Gerlach, who used their grant to research the use of LEDs in theatre technology, developed the Selador series of LED light fixtures.

USITT to Launch “Spark” Innovation Symposium in Sept. 2014

FORT WORTH — The United States Institute for Theatre Technology used its 2014 Annual Conference & Stage Expo in Fort Worth to launch a new annual event to spark innovations in entertainment technology. The first Spark entertainment innovation symposium will be held at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts Sept. 7 to 9, 2014, USITT President Lea Asbell-Swanger announced in her opening remarks Wednesday, March 26.

Eugene Lee Accepts Distinguished Achievement Award at USITT 2014

FORT WORTH — USITT honored Eugene Lee with its 2014 Distinguished Achievement Award in Scene Design at the 54th Annual Conference & Stage Expo here March 28. USITT Scene Design co-commissioner Michelle Harvey, pictured right, presented the award. Lee was recognized for a career that includes 40 years as production designer for Saturday Night Live and three Tony awards for best scenic design, for Broadway’s Candide (1974), Sweeney Todd (1979) and Wicked (2004).

“Reflection Field” Artwork Planned for Coachella 2014

INDIO, CA — Phillip K. Smith III, who used mirrors and LEDs to transform the look of an abandoned desert cabin from day into night for two weeks last fall, a project titled Lucid Stead (lucidstead.com), has been commissioned by the organizers of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival for a new work, Reflection Field. Also incorporating mirrored surfaces and LED light sources, the artwork is expected to serve as a key artistic focal point for the 2014 festival, which returns to the Empire Polo Club fairgrounds here April 11-13 and April 18-20.

New Club in Melbourne, Australia Installs Martin Rush Fixtures

MELBOURNE, Australia – The Emerson, an entertainment venue here that offers patrons dining, drinking and dancing options, is also adding visual flash with Martin Rush lighting fixtures sourced via Australian distributor Show Technology. South West Solutions designed and installed a system that includes six MH2 Wash, four MH1 Profile and four MH3 Beam fixtures, with a control solution that includes Martin M-PC V3 controller software accessed via a touch screen along with a M2PC control surface for live control.
