LONDON – Among those dressed for the occasion of Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee were Union Jack-sporting Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures. LD Durham Marenghi used more than 240 of the compact fixtures – 60 with the custom flag decorations – for the live and televised concert event at Buckingham Palace. Each customized Sharpy had to undergo a special heat test, and 14 days of programming put them through all sorts of weather conditions prior to the big day.

Martin Exterior LEDs Illuminate Rotterdam’s Thornico Building

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands – The Thornico Group’s philosophy of green initiatives called for the use of Martin LED lighting on the Thornico Building in Rotterdam. The most significant aspect of the LED lighting installation is 170 meters of vertical LED tubes mounted on the building’s 4,000 sq. meter facade. The full-color RGB LED tubes delineate the architectural form and indicate the locations of the main entrances.

Clay Paky Fixtures Light Up Electric Daisy Carnival in NYC Area

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Clay Paky lighting fixtures turned out in force for the three-day Electric Daisy Carnival (EDC).  Show designer/director Stephen Lieberman of SJ Lighting, Inc. chose a large complement of Clay Paky Sharpy, Alpha Spot HPE 1500 and Shotlight fixtures for all the moving lights on the EDC’s main stage. Lieberman’s design philosophy this year was ‘Go big!’

XL Events Make Royal Showing at Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert

LONDON – The UK’s weekend-long celebration of The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebration hit a high point with The Queen’s Jubilee Concert at Buckingham Palace. XL Events played a big role in the concert, creating the projection mapping onto the Palace and also the wraparound screens for the concert stage around the Queen Victoria Monument in front of the Palace. LD Durham Marenghi and XL Event’s Project Manager Steve Greetham guided the design.

WorldStage Devises Smart Solutions for ‘American Idiot’ Tour

NEW YORK – “American Idiot: The Musical” is now on national tour with AV support from WorldStage. The tour began directly after the Broadway run of the show, which is based on Green Day’s album. The show features an extensive amount of video with more than three dozen flat-screen monitors, provided by Vizio, suspended in frames throughout the obliquely angled warehouse-like living space by set designer Christine Jones.  The set’s walls also serve as large projection surfaces. The key was designing a touring system to accommodate a variety of venues.

Clay Paky Dominates Eurovision Song Contest

BAKU, Azerbaijan – The Eurovision Song Contest recently completed its 57th year, held at The Baku Crystal Hall in Azerbaijan. LD Jerry Appelt specified an arsenal of 2,891 lighting fixtures. Of the 1,400-plus moving heads, 667 were Clay Paky fixtures. One lighting element new to the Eurovision stage was the Parasol KLR (Kinetic Light Ring) system, hung directly over the stage, which allows moving lights to move along a fixed path on a linear or curved truss. The Eurovision system consisted of three concentric rings with circular motion, all lit with Alpha Beam 1500s, with their independent and simultaneous motion over the stage for a dynamic effect.

High Resolution Systems’ HRS Control Pro from Apple’s App Store has gone live. The new app for High Resolution Systems’ UDC (Universal Device Controller) software for Apple-related products allows customers more options. Both the Apple and the previously-introduced Windows controller apps offer the ability to download different UDC configurations and store them for offline viewing.

Every step in the production process was carried out in close collaboration with Madonna and her team, including show director Michel Laprise of Cirque du Soleil, set designer Mark Fisher, lighting designer Al Gurdon, production manager Jake Berry, video technical director Stefaan Desmedt and choreographers Rich + Tone.
