Barco HDX-W20 Flex

The problem with new technology and gear is that you usually only get to put your hands on it the day before a gig, or worse, actually on the gig. I’ll admit — under duress is usually the best way to learn a piece of gear, but not exactly the most stress-free activity in the world. So I was delighted to be able to get my hands on the Barco HDX W20 Flex actually in a shop and not under any time gun or a client breathing down my neck.

MA Lighting featured the dot2 Console at PL+S 2015 in Frankfurt, Germany

dot2 Console from MA Lighting

MA Lighting has somehow hidden the secret that they have been working on a new console pretty much since they debuted the grandMA Series 2 line five years ago. Perfect Patching

Automated lighting consoles are full of features, many of which rarely get used. However there is one feature that is required for every single show: patching. A patch is a set of instructions that assign specific controls on the desk to fixtures and their attributes in the real world. It is vital for lighting programmers to understand how to patch their console and how to use the various options within the patch window. While some of the terminology may change from desk to desk, the basic procedures remain the same regardless of the console.

Touring Life on the Tech Crew (When You Don’t Look Like The Other Boys…)

My name is Becky Pell, and I am an anomaly. I’m a live sound engineer, and I’m a woman. It’s an unusual combination, but I’m rarely conscious of it until someone points it out. Usually the conversation goes something like: “Wow, a female monitor engineer, you don’t see that very often.” Me: “No, there aren’t many of us.” Them: “Why is that?” Well, here I have to confess ignorance; as I am one, I’m kind of the wrong person to ask! Why are we the unicorns of the touring world? And what’s life like as a woman on the road?
