Hall and Oates are getting ready to spend some considerable time on the road this year, playing 95 percent amphitheaters while performing on some three-week long legs of a tour. They recently held a one-day production rehearsal followed by an intimate first show at the Santander Arena in Reading, PA. Then they packed it all up and headed to the Big Apple, where they sold out a Saturday night show at Madison Square Garden. Opening the show with “Out of Touch,” the hits kept coming, and the audience did their part to sing along at the big dance party.

ANTWERP, Belgium – Painting with Light’s Luc Peumans energized a creative team to deliver video content for a 3D digital set and lighting design for the Judas TheaterProducties staging of Helene Fourment. The new musical focuses on Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens’ young muse. It was staged at the Fakkeltheater in Antwerp. Painting with Light’s Michael Al Far created the video content and Jeroen Opsteyn was associate lighting designer and also programmed the lighting with Luc. All worked very closely with set designer Arno Bremers.

It was hard to accurately envision the incredible sight of a ski ramp rising up out of Fenway Park when, on a beautiful sunny fall day in September, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), along with Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh and Fenway Sports Management (FSM), announced that the beloved ballpark would host a big air snowboarding and freeskiing U.S. Grand Prix tour event. However, in mid-February, it quickly captured the attention of Bostonians when in the bitter cold the massive freestanding Big Air snow ramp soared to three times the height of the walls of Fenway’s Green Monster.

AUKLAND, NZ – The 53rd Halberg Awards, which honor New Zealand’s top sporting achievements, involved a collaboration between the event’s lighting, audio and LED screens supplier, Oceania, broadcast partner OSB and broadcaster SKY TV which runs the show and manages content for the three-hour live telecast. Thirty Robe BMFL Spots and 20 Pointes were included in the lighting rig this year, among other fixtures, all of which were rigged in the Vector Arena, Auckland.

Now 53, his peripatetic career has taken him to Beijing, London, Sochi, the Vatican, Niagara Falls and most of the U.S. He has applied his art to subjects as diverse as the band Twisted Sister and Barbara Streisand, Keith Olbermann and Howard Stern, the Ohio Ballet and the election of Pope Francis. As PLSN spoke with him in late January, he was gearing up to head to the Trump-less final Republican presidential debate in Iowa, where he would direct lighting for the post-debate “spin room” and other support segments.

It’s been a couple of years since we last checked in with Blizzard Lighting, the company based just outside of Milwaukee in Waukesha, Wisconsin. I was quite impressed when I checked in with them at LDI six months ago. They are no longer what one would have referred to as a mom and pop company just a few short years ago. They have expanded their business in size and the diversity of their products, at a rapid pace. They are indeed, a major player in the lighting manufacturing biz.

As part of the release of Andrea Bocelli’s Cinema album, a collection of iconic movie theme songs, he performed a special one-night concert at Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre. The show was taped for broadcast on PBS. The reaction to the production was so good that Bocelli and his team decided to modify the one-off production into a tourable concert. The Cinema World Tour recently completed its first leg through the U.S., including dates in Phoenix, Las Vegas, New York City, and Washington DC.
