Sixth Knight of Illumination Awards Winners Announced

LONDON — The Society of Television & Lighting Design (STLD), The Association of Lighting Designers (ALD), Clay Paky and its U.K. distributor Ambersphere Solutions are all organizers of the Knight of Illumination (KOI) Awards. They announced the winners of the sixth annual KOI event, held Oct. 6 at London ExCel’s Platinum Suite. The annual Enrico Caironi Lifetime Recognition Award went to Ian Dow. King Kong LD Peter Mumford Uses Sharpys to Propel Visual Narrative

MELBOURNE, Australia — For the musical, King Kong, which has been running at the Regent Theatre here since its opening night on June 15, LD Peter Mumford has used lighting and video to propel the narrative that also includes Global Creature’s 20-foot-high animatronic gorilla. Clay Paky Sharpys are used in new ways for the production — among them, to create architectural grid effects across the stage and also to torment the beast with sharp, bullet-like bursts of light.

South African Production of Starlight Express includes ETC Eos

JOHANNESBURG — LD Declan Randall opted to use an Eos console for the South African debut of Starlight Express at the Joburg Theatre Complex here. The setup includes an ETC Eos RPU (Remote Processor Unit), which will serve as backup, and ETC’s Net3 Gateways, which run eight DMX universes to support the high fixture count and data distribution required for the show. The desk also utilizes a wireless Ethernet network hub for remote control.

The event, which kicked off the company’s 50th season and drew an audience of more than 50,000, was supported by a theatrical lighting package from Advanced Lighting & Production Services (ALPS). The event featured the largest stage ever built on Boston Common, as well as a full live orchestra.
