LONDON – The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) staged the London premiere of Scuttlers in its city center GBS Theatre, an intense drama about the struggles and power politics of 19th century Manchester street gangs set against a steaming, grinding industrial revolution backdrop bringing massive social change and great uncertainty. The work was written by Rona Munro in response to the UK’s unsettling spate of urban riots in 2011. Directed by Hannah Eidinow, the production was lit by Declan Randall, a South African theatre lighting specialist living in the UK, who made use of a number of different Robe fixtures available at RADA.

60K+ Standards Downloaded from ESTA’s Technical Standards Program, Thanks to ProSight Specialty Insurance

NYC – Since April 15, 2013, ESTA, the Entertainment Services and Technology Association, has been able to offer all of its American National Standards and other published documents for download at no cost on their website at tsp.esta.org/freestandards. As of August 3, 2017, over 60,000 standards had been downloaded by over 10,000 users. This total for four years is more than an order of magnitude greater than the number of standards distributed in the 16 years the documents were only available for sale.

LONDON – An ambitious production of Sir Edward Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius — a collaboration between the English National Opera, Royal Festival Hall and BBC Singers, was described by lighting designer Lucy Carter as “dramatic, soulful, beautiful, calm and overwhelming.” Her aim “to map the emotions of the music in order to give the audience a visceral sensation, with all lighting textures complementary to the music” was achieved with 160 of GLP’s award-winning X4 Bars, which were used almost exclusively in the set.

Jeff Hinton, working for Jonny B. Enterprises, supported their intense non-stop 90-minute performance with a hard-hitting lightshow that featured 16 of the moving fixtures.

National Theatre Meets Growing Demand For GLP’S X4 Bars

SAN FERNANDO, CA – The National Theatre in London has invested heavily for the second time in GLP’s award-winning impression X4 Bar 20’s. Lighting Resources Manager, Paul Hornsby, has added to the initial tranche of 18, which he purchased as soon as they first became available, with a further 20 in order to meet the increasing demand. Both batches were supplied by GLP dealer, White Light. Explaining the rationale, he stated, “We have an extremely substantial rig at the National, and so every year, with my onsite team, we evaluate and discuss what needs replacing and upgrading, depending on both lighting designers’ requests and advances in technology.

CHICAGO – It’s easy to see why the Atlantic Ballroom at the Radisson Blu Aqua has become a sought-after venue for A-list parties and events. With its 20’ windows and outdoor balcony, the 1,200-capacity room offers spectacular views of Chicago’s fabled skyline and Lake Michigan far below.  Architectural flourishes like a high ribbed ceiling add to the room’s elegance. Creating a connective sense of warmth inside this spacious area, without distracting attention from its panoramic features, presented a challenge to Jordan Chance of Luxe Productions in late May, when he was asked to light the room for a fundraising ball.
