Three Electric Nights in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS — The Electric Daisy Carnival’s dusk-to-dawn electronic music and arts extravaganza moved from Los Angeles to Las Vegas this summer, adding a third night to the schedule. AG Lighting, Felix Lighting and Visions Lighting served as primary lighting gear providers for the five-stage event at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The total attendee count was near 250,000, far exceeding the 130,000 who attended the two-day event in Los Angeles last year — even topping Coachella’s 2011 turnout.

OmniSistem Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Chris Giannoulas’ story is America’s: he grew up in a one-bedroom home in the tiny village call Mesochora, Greece; made it to these shores in 1969; and built a dynamic, successful company. This year, he and his family celebrate OmniSistem, and the 25 years they’ve spent providing products to the entertainment industry.

The Motherf**ker With The Hat

Stephen Aldy Guirgis’ play, The Motherf**ker With the Hat, automatically created a stir with its bleeped title (it was referred to as The Mother With the Hat during this year’s Tony Awards ceremony), and it definitely created a reaction among its audience. Many people who probably expected to see a lot of co-star Chris Rock’s comedic shtick were treated to a powerful show about a recovering alcoholic, played by Tony nominee Bobby Cannavale (one of six nominees on the show), coping with his own weaknesses and his girlfriend’s perceived infidelity while dealing with the dubious motivations and wisdom of his AA sponsor, played by Rock.

New Technologies and Biggest Orlando Turnout Yet

InfoComm11 was a record-setter — more than 33,000 attendees poured through Orlando’s Orange County Convention Center West Hall to learn about new Pro AV products and services. With a wide assortment of new products to view, three days (June 15-17) seemed hardly enough time — and to cover every product, we’d need a whole issue. Instead, we include some of the more noteworthy product developments here, and you can find expanded coverage of InfoComm11 and additional photos at www.ProLightingSpace.com.

Uplighting WELL with Chauvet

Wires, wires, wires everywhere. We have all been there. Whether they’re on the truss or the ground, we’ve spent countless hours dressing cables for neatness and safety. A huge amount of time and tape can be devoted to this one aspect of the production. This is all before the production even happens! Just as much time can be spent picking up the gaff tape and cords and storing them.

Setup for Hot Wheels Fearless at the 500

Hot Wheels Plays for Real

Remember how, as a kid, you’d take a Hot Wheels track, hook it up to something like a door, and create some psycho-jump ramp? Then you’d pick your favorite car, and let it fly down and watch it careen into the air accompanied by whatever race car sounds you could vocalize? Scott Humphrey does because he did it more recently than you or I. Not sure whether he made race-car sounds though — he certainly didn’t need to because he did it for real.

Doug Fleenor Design

“I’ve always been interested in live entertainment,” Doug Fleenor confesses. “I put together my first sound system at seven, which involved a Lafayette PA horn, an Allied crystal microphone and a B-Stock tube amp from a local stereo store.” And no one would doubt when he says in high school he was that AV geek.

DMX Control for Trade Show Visuals

DMX has come a long way. These days, in addition to stage lighting, a DMX interface can be used to control the entire performance environment — everything from audio and video to automation. But its uses aren’t limited to a concert or theatre stage. DMX can also be used by those looking to control — and synchronize — trade show booth components from a single source.

A.C.T Lighting Gets Its New Act Together

It’s early June as this is written, and I’m still not sure why I haven’t already followed my own advice and bailed on the markets on the June 1 D-Day that my gut had been forecasting. As if they had coordinated their schedule with the my acid reflux, the economic barometers began reflecting the perfect storm of a housing market with no buyer incentives, the ending of the second round of quantitative easing and a negative jobs report. But despite the growing panic in the back of CNBC’s collective throat, I’m still on board a shaky ship, wanting to believe that, to paraphrase Hunter Thompson, when the going gets weird, the weird double down.

Learning to Park

When I was 15 years old and learning to drive, the big challenge was to parallel park. This skill was required in order to gain a license. I did very well and passed my test, but now I very rarely ever have to parallel park my car. On rare occasions, I find myself confronted with the task, and usually I do well as I ease the car nicely into its slot. This is only possible because I had previously learned the procedures for parking. In a similar manner, automated lighting programmers are sometimes required to use a console feature commonly known as “park.” This feature can be very handy in many situations during both programming and playback.

Communicating Globally

¿Habla usted español? If not, you may want to try. At least for a few key phrases.

The Spanish-speaking population in the U.S. has topped 50 million — 16.3 percent of the total, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics. Projections by researchers such as Cuban linguist Humberto Lopez Morales also indicate that, by 2050, 10 percent of the world will speak Spanish, double the English-speaking population, while percentages for French and German decline to 1.4 and 1.2 percent.
