Scharff Weisberg Lights USGA Learning Tents

NEW YORK — Scharff Weisberg lit “Learning Tents” for two professional golf events this summer, working on behalf of Momentum Worldwide.  The events were the US Open 2009 in Farmingdale, N.Y. and the 91st PGA Championship in Chaska, Minn., where a second hospitality tent for corporate VIPs was added.  Scharff Weisberg supplied all the lighting and A/V equipment for the venues.

Revised Fog Effects Standard Available for Public Review

NEW YORK — ESTA’s Technical Standards Program has posted BSR E1.23 — 20XX Entertainment Technology — Design and Execution of Theatrical Fog Effects on its Web site for public review. It is a proposed revision of the existing ANSI E1.23-2006 standard related to glycol, glycerin or white mineral oil theatrical fog effects.

Trevor Gooch Joins The Lighting Design Group

NEW YORK, NY — The Lighting Design Group has announced that Trevor Gooch has joined its staff as a full time gaffer and production electrician.  Gooch had previously worked as a freelance gaffer and electrician with LDG for such projects such as the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the relight of the QVC Studios in Westchester, Penn. and the 2008 Election Plaza at Rockefeller Center.

LEDs Light Up El Paso Shopping Center, Club

EL PASO, TX — It may have sounded a bit quixotic at first, but developer Alex Dias gave his Windmill Shopping Center here the look of a Las Vegas nightclub in order to attract customers. On closer inspection, however, the 600-foot run of LED video appears to make more sense — Diaz also owns Nova Luna, a Vegas-style nightclub located in the center.

In Memoriam: Harry Donovan, 1943-2009

Harry Donovan, one of the world’s foremost rigging experts and author of Entertainment Rigging, died Sept. 23 after an ongoing battle with cancer. Donovan, 66, was both an engineer and one of the entertainment industry’s most experienced and respected riggers, a unique combination. He devoted his career to studying the art and science of rigging.
