LOS ANGELES and SEATTLE – Keith Wissmar, LD for Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Neil Young, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals, Jack Johnson, and Gary Clark Jr., among others, died July 30 after a 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer. A private service was planned in Los Angeles. A memorial in Seattle is set for the Paramount Theater on Aug. 26 from 2-6 p.m.

NEW YORK – LD Luke Stratton, an LD and FOH audio engineer for jam-rock quartet Dopapod, who posts a series of podcasts called The Light Side, shared a link to an audio podcast of his interview with Phish lighting designer/director Chris Kuroda and associate designer and programmer Andrew Giffin. The designers discussed the abstract video and lighting looks for Phish’s recently concluded Baker’s Dozen Shows at Madison Square Garden, including the morphing light rig used for the shows. Phish performed 13 shows over a 17-night span that ran from July 21 to Aug. 6, touting both the shows (and free Federal donuts) as being jam-packed.

LOWELL, MA – For the 2017 Steubenville East Catholic Youth Conference, held July 13-15 at UMass Lowell, Tim Messina of Events United had a brainstorm: to turn the seven-letter word, “ELEVATE,” into an 80-foot video wall. To carry out his vision without blowing the production budget for the event, he made use of 67 PVP X6IP tiles from Chauvet Professional.

RYE, CO – Sonic Bloom, an EDM music festival, was staged June 15-18 at Hummingbird Ranch near Rye, CO, amid the splendor of Colorado’s Spanish Peaks. Denver-based Nexus Productions has been working the festival for the past four years and this year served as the main stage lighting vendor (Bloom Stage) for the first time, supplying all trussing, lighting, motors, distros and more.
