  • In Memoriam: Andy Figueroa Jr., Marvin Gelman

    ARTESIA, CA and WESTPORT, CT — The lighting industry lost two of its own in late November: Andy Figueroa Jr., 30, died after a Nov. 27 car accident in his hometown; Marvin Gelman, 84, founder of Lighting Services Inc. (LSI), an architectural lighting products manufacturer, died Nov. 29 of complications from cancer. Figueroa, known as “Andy Fig Jr.,” was the son of lighting programmer/director Andrew Figueroa, Sr. and had emerged as a prominent lighting tech/lighting director himself. Gelman, who retired from LSI in 2000, is credited for many advances in track, accent and display lighting.

One of the biggest events was Lollapalooza Aug. 5-7  in Chicago, where they designed and installed a new stage barrier configuration for crowds of up to 90,000 people each day.

    Designers Give Rockettes Show Extra Kick with Projection on Radio City Music Hall Arch

    NEW YORK – Visual Acuity, batwin+robin, Digital Projection and 7thSense Design kicked up the visuals at this year’s Radio City Christmas Spectacular featuring the Rockettes. The concept was to provide a more immersive experience for audiences through the use of large-scale video projection mapped to architectural features of Radio City Music Hall — including the venue’s iconic proscenium arch. The project was one year in the making.

    BERLIN, NJ — Craig Dains, 26, an account executive at The Healy Group, a representative of American DJ, Elation Professional, Acclaim Lighting and other brands, died Nov. 13 from complications of heart disease. Remembered for his “energy, enthusiasm and wonderful personality,” American DJ noted that Dains “will be missed by all of us who knew him.”

    Gemini Open House Featured Parasol KLR System

    DALLAS - Gemini LSV (Light Sound Video) held an open house Nov. 16-17 to demonstrate the Parasol KLR-10 (Kinetic Light Ring) system. Gemini became the first company to purchase this system, which enables a designer to move the source point of a number of automated lighting fixtures along a pre-defined path. The system setup at LDI 2011 is pictured here, with Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures.
