    Tree Lighting Ceremonies Feature Live Performances, LED Luster

    NEW YORK, WASHINGTON, DC and LOS ANGLELES — The 2011 Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony, held Nov. 30 and broadcast live on NBC, has come a long way since workers at the office complex first pulled out the ladders and plugged in the lights in 1931. (The first ceremony took place two years later.) This year’s tree, a 74-foot spruce from Mifflinville, PA, featured 30,000 sparkling LED lights powered via 5 miles of cabling and topped by a six-sided, 9.5-foot-diameter, 550-lb. star made with 25,000 Swarovski crystals. The star itself was lit with 720 LEDs.

    LOS ANGELES - KTLA TV coverage got some light relief on the red carpet recently at the Prime Time Television Awards at the Nokia Theater. With a low afternoon sun shining opposite the camera position, additional light from Litepanels new Hilio High Output LED daylight lighting fixtures saved the camera coverage.

LD/Lighting Director Kenji Ohashi specified MAC 2000 Wash XB, MAC 2000 Beam XB and MAC III Profile moving heads along with MAC 101 LED fixtures for the "Mirrorball" tour, which runs through December.

    LOS ANGELES — Andrew Figueroa, Jr., 30, a lighting tech/lighting director who started his career at age 16, died Nov. 27 after a car accident in Artesia, CA. Figueroa’s credits included Rage Against the Machine, Rob Zombie, The Black Crowes, Rockstar Supernova, A Perfect Circle, The Crystal Method, and many other tours, events and corporate shows. He had also worked with Delicate Productions, Obie's Lighting Production, RK Diversified Entertainment, U.S. Audio and Lighting, L.A. Stagecall and many other shops. Known as “Andy Fig Jr.,” he is the son of lighting programmer/director Andrew Figueroa, Sr.

The exhibit is designed to simulate the observation deck of a starship. Lightswitch's design helps take visitors from the fully-lit world to the immersive environment leading to the Grainger Sky Theater.
