LAS VEGAS — October may still seem like a long time away, but the planning for the 2016 Parnelli Awards is already revving into high gear, with the first round of voting for regional Hometown Hero companies already underway and nominations for the other Parnelli Awards categories less than two weeks away. As in years past, the live event industry is stepping up to support the 2016 Parnelli Awards gala (Oct. 22) and golf tournament (Oct. 20) in a big way, with more than 30 sponsors announced by mid-July.

BOSTON – The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular is a tradition that spans 40 years. Hundreds of thousands gathered at the historic DCR Hatch Shell to celebrate America’s independence while fireworks exploded in the air during a performance by Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, and the Boston Pops Orchestra. This year’s event was also broadcast live on CBS for millions across the country to enjoy. Lighting designer Mike Berger, of Full Flood Inc., was responsible for lighting this year’s 4th of July celebration using gear from 4Wall New York.

NEW YORK — Justin Bieber’s Purpose tour wraps up a long series of North American dates with two big shows at Madison Square Garden on July 18 and 19 before heading overseas. The rig includes 56 Robe Pointes and two BMFL Spots. Cory FitzGerald programmed the show with the help of Davey Martinez, and Nick Van Nostrand is lighting director and operator on the road. The lighting equipment is being supplied to the tour by VER.

CLEVELAND, OH – LD Trevor Ahlstrand and lighting director Wesley Palmer have been lighting country music artist Brett Eldredge’s recent shows with Chauvet Professional’s new Rogue R1 FX-B fixture. Premier Global Production is supplying 24 of the new Rogue blade-style moving lights for Eldredge’s opening-act performances on Keith Urban’s RipCord tour through North America. That tour launched in early June and runs through Nov. 19.

NASHVILLE — One look at Here Come the Mummies and it’s easy to see why they are considered one of the most unique bands around. Combining identities that are always “under wraps” with a reputation for unrelenting live performances, the eight-piece funk band from Nashville is touring the U.S. beneath a lighting rig of Elation Professional effect lights. Lighting Designer/Director and programmer Thom Roberts has been working with the band for the past three years and is out on their current “LoveFest” tour, which runs until the end of October.

BEDFORD, PA – Jam bands expect their lighting designers to be ready to punt at the drop of a hat and come up with a fresh look for a new guitar riff that just pops up in the middle of a set.  At the recent Domefest, however, funk rockers Pigeons Playing Ping Pong asked their LD Manny Newman to go a step (make that many steps!) further. The popular group, which started the annual three-day jam festival in 2010, wanted Manny to create a flexible punt-ready lightshow for an eclectic mix of over 20 bands.
