LAS VEGAS — When LD, educator and USITT regional chair Don Childs founded the Stagecraft Institute of Las Vegas in 2006 with wife and partner Jane Childs, the primary motivation wasn’t a quick financial jackpot. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, the organization endured years of red ink after its launch. But the intensive, eight-week summer program, which continues to operate under Jane Childs’ leadership after Don Childs’ death in late 2011, is rich in other respects, drawing support from well-known faculty members and top production companies and manufacturers.

BET Experience Concerts Shine with Chauvet Nexus Diamonds from Visions Lighting

LOS ANGELES — The 14th BET Awards, broadcast live from Nokia Theatre June 29, capped off a weekend of live performances running from June 27-29 at the Staples Center and Club Nokia collectively called the BET Experience at L.A. Live. At Staples Center, performers included Maxwell and Jill Scott (June 27), OutKast and Rick Ross (June 28) and Mary J. Blige, Trey Songz and Jennifer Hudson (June 28). Visions Lighting provided visual support that included 64 Nexus 4×4 LED panels from Chauvet Professional.

Tobin Center’s H-E-B Hall Gets Lift from Tait

SAN ANTONIO — The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts opened Sept. 5 in San Antonio’s old Municipal Auditorium, which dates from 1926. The repurposed venue includes the 1,759-seat H-E-B Performance Hall, which has been equipped with a custom stage lift provided by Tait (Lititz, PA) and its sister companies Stage Technologies (Las Vegas) and Delstar Engineering in the U.K.

Minnesota Megachurch Lit with Martin Fixtures

LINO LAKES, Minnesota – Fast-growing Eagle Brook Church now has six locations for 18,000 congregants in the Twin Cities area, with churchs in Lino Lakes, Blaine, Coon Rapids, Spring Lake Park, White Bear Lake and Woodbury, MN. The church has 16 Martin MAC Viper Air FX fixtures and eight Martin 250 Washes at Lino Lakes, 10 MAC 700 Profiles and four MAC 250 Entours in Blaine, six MAC 250 Entours and six MAC 250 washes at Spring Lake Park and eight washes and six MAC 250 Entours at White Bear Lake. They also got a big assist from Bandit Lites, which provided lighting fixtures from Chauvet, Clay Paky, Martin, TMB/Solaris, Vari-Lite and their own GRNLite brand along with 140 motors, 2,000+ feet of truss and grandMA2 and HES Road Hog consoles for control.

Absen Certified Engineer (ACE) Training Program Set for Oct. 15-17, 2014 in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA – From Oct 15 to 17, 2014, Absen American Inc. (Absen LED) is going to hold the sixth Absen Certified Engineer (ACE) training, in cooperation with Branam Enterprises here.  This is the third ACE training in the US. Robe Pointes Used for O.A.R. Tour

To create a clean, modern lighting aesthetic for O.A.R.’s summer tour, LD Jeremy Lechterman chose Robe Pointes as one of the core elements of his lighting design. They were used for everything from spectacular aerial effects, to soft, subtle gobo work and from wash lights to laser simulations highlighting the band during solos.  “They are without doubt the most multi-functional and multi-used light in the rig.” he confirmed, adding “which is really impressive considering their neat size!”
