DENMARK – Danish Lighting Designer Robert Juhl has long known the pluses of LED lighting fixtures, such as low power draw, low heat generation, full dimming with no color temperature change and long bulb life. But because of the green cast in the light output from early LED lights, he stayed with the tried and true tungsten halogen and HMI lighting fixtures—until now.

SUN VALLEY, CA – Spanish wholesaler Monacor Iberia, which supplies professionals in the field of security and event equipment, has taken on the exclusive distribution of GLP products in Spain, with immediate effect. GLP managing director, Udo Künzler, stated, “It was important to have a presence in the Spanish market, and to do so with a professional partner who understands the needs of the local market. WINCHESTER, UK – THE 2016 Boomtown Festival, staged Aug. 11-14, featured a new stage and performance area, Sector 6. Dan Borg’s unusual set design featured an industrial vibe with tons of scrap metal. Borg and Boomtown’s production manager Robin Collins turned to Dave Whiteoak of Video Illusions for a lighting and video assist. Whiteoak brought in LD Sam Tozer from Vision Factory, and lighting rental company GLS supplied the needed gear.

LONDON – DL7S LED Profile luminaires from Robe made their U.K. debut at the Coliseum in London’s Covent Garden, as part of the lighting rig for the English National Opera (ENO) production of Wagner’s Tristan & Isolde directed by Daniel Kramer. Lighting was designed by Paul Anderson, set and scenic elements were created by influential sculptor Anish Kapoor and the video was designed by Frieder Weiss.

SANTIAGO, Chile – A new world record was set for the Guinness Book of records at the La Florida stadium in Santiago, Chile, on May 22. A total of 2,357 players took part in a 120-hour soccer match and broke the previous record held by England, where a non-stop 105-hour game was played. The match, which was organized by Entel and Huaweii, was accompanied by a closing show. Local production company Real Audio Sistemas provided Clay Paky Mythos, Scenius, Sharpy Wash 330 and Alpha Spot HPE 1500 fixtures.

SYDNEY – Vivid Sydney once again lit up the city’s streets and skyline, and Clay Paky fixtures, which had been used for past installations, returned for the 2016 event as well.

EDINBURGH, Scotland – The 2016 Festival Fringe, which ran from Aug. 5-29, featured more than 50,000 performances in more than 300 venues, with genres ranging from drama, musical, dance, physical theatre, comedy, cabaret, opera, music, spoken word and many more. Zero 88 lighting control was once again right at the hub of this vibrant experience.

HAMBURG, Germany – Robe moving lights – including 65 DL4 series luminaires in the form of 50 x DL4F LED washes and 15 x DL4S Profiles  – were again selected as flagship fixtures for the four major entertainment areas aboard Mein Schiff 5, the latest cruise ship to be launched by German based operator TUI Cruises. This follows up the very successful Robe installation on Mein Schiff 3 in 2014 and Mein Schiff 4 in 2015.

SINGAPORE – This year’s Queen + Adam Lambert Summer Festival tour began in Europe and will wrap up in Asia at the end of September.  Queen’s long history of pushing the envelope, both musically and aesthetically, continues with a design from LD Rob Sinclair and scenic designer Ric Lipson of Stufish Entertainment Architecture. The summer shows were enhanced with Firefly FloppyFlex LED Neon and Solaris SoLED strobes from TMB.

LEEDS, UK – Bridge Street Community Church in Leeds, UK, has opened up a new worship building and outfitted the space with Elation Professional stage and broadcast lighting, designed, supplied and installed by Wigwam Acoustics. The new purpose-built Bridge Community Church is a multipurpose building catering for conferences and live events, as well as weekly church services. The newly completed development provides the church with a comprehensive community center that includes a 1000-capacity auditorium, café and other facilities.

LONDON – Organizers for this year’s Knight of Illumination Awards have announced the “shortlist” for the “TV” lighting category, which follows the “Theatre” and “Concert Touring and Events” shortlists disclosed earlier. The 2016 TV judging panel is made up of Stuart Gain (Chairperson) and STLD committee members John O’Brien, Andrew Dixon and Alan Luxford.

JOHANNESBURG  – “Welcome to Tomorrow” was the catch phrase used to introduce some of Gearhouse Group’s latest technology to 600 of the organization’s top clients and suppliers. The launch was housed in the inaugural build of the Maxi Dome Lite Venue, a custom temporary structure designed and built in South Africa by Gearhouse In2Structures, the Group’s specialist design and manufacturing company.
