WUPPERTAL, Germany – For the Red Bull Air Race World Championship, which ran annually from 2003 to 2010 before returning in 2014 with races held in Abu Dhabi (Feb. 28), Rovinj, Croatia (April 12) and Putrajaya, Malaysia (May 18), relied upon a signal distribution system built by Riedel engineers for video, audio, communications, and data. The MediorNet real-time media network includes seven MediorNet Compact frames and three MediorNet Modular frames. Technicians interface audio signals via MADI and Riedel’s RockNet digital audio network solution in combination with MediorNet to integrate the event’s main mixing console, located in the OB van that provided the big-screen mix for the live audience. Riedel also supplied the wireless video links and HD cameras for the racing planes’ onboard cameras, thus enabling pictures to be delivered from the pilots’ perspectives. The 2014 series makes several more stops before finishing in China in November.

Getting the right mix of lighting for both TV and live elements was crucial for the final of Germany’s 2014 Next Top Model so LD Manuel Da Costa turned to Robe’s ROBIN CycFX 8 fixtures. He used 44 x CycFX 8s in total, mostly rigged to the side stage wings and used to wash parts of the catwalk as general illumination and also to create some bold and distinctive effects.

For One Direction’s latest stadium tour, Brilliant Stages delivered a series of staging elements designed around a central theme of a skatepark. The 3-dimensional diamond-shaped ‘skate park’ features multiple performer levels that spread across the 54m wide x 21m deep main stage. The set incorporates pairs of ego- and band-risers, perimeter ramps and screamers arranged either side of a steep central slope, which rakes upstage at a 19° angle to a height of 4.5m, and is fronted by a 34m long skate thrust to the B-stage.

PERTH, Australia – LD Flynn Talbot utilised the intense colour of three Philips Selecon PLprofile1 LED luminaires to add another dimension to his latest stunning light installation ‘Primary’. “It was integral for this project that the triangles to appear to glow,” says Talbot. “This meant I needed a luminaire with the ability to shape the beam to precisely the edge of each triangle as any spill light would detract from the effect. The PLprofile1 luminaires delivered a perfectly defined beam, even at their widest beam angle of 44º, which was ideal for lighting the large structure from a relatively short throw distance.”

DUBAI, UAE – LD Debbi Fowler used an arsenal of Clay Paky lighting fixtures to illuminate Lionel Richie’s performance at the open-air Media City Amphitheatre here. Dubai based Eclipse provided the Clay Paky fixtures, which included Alpha Spot HPE 1500, Alpha Profile 1500, Sharpy and Sharpy Wash 330 fixtures.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — For a production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert at Lola Membrives de Calle Corrientes’ Theatre here,  the lighting system included more than 50 D.T.S. moving lights. The setup included 36 XR3000 SPOT CMY fixtures and 16 x XR1200 WASH hung on five horizontal trusses and set at both sides of the stage.

TEL AVIV, Israel – For a Prodigy concert at Trade Fairs Centre here, LD Andy Hurst used more than 120 Robe fixtures including 32 Pointes, 76 LEDBeam 100s and 16 LEDWash 600s supplied by Argaman Systems. The gear mostly came from Argaman’s stock, but Danor Rental provided some of the fixtures.

MUNICH – For a recent tour featuring electronic/rap artist Marteria, LD Tjorre Hasubski used 42 fixtures from Clay Paky in the lighting rig, including 22 Alpha Spot QWO 800s and 20 Clay Paky Sharpys. They were controlled by a full-size grandMA2 and grandMA2 light console along with one VPU basic MK2 and two 12 x 2.3 kVA digital dimmers, all from MA Lighting.

LEICESTER, U.K. – Kasabian’s homecoming concert here recently featured a lighting design by Renegade Design LD Nick Gray. The event, which drew 50,000 to Victoria Park, supported the band’s latest album, 48:13. Gray collaborated with Kasabian creative director/show designer Aitor Throup on the project, which included more than 500 lighting fixtures and an elaborate video setup.

LONDON — Serious Stages reported a five-year deal with Glastonbury Festival to provide all of the stages and custom temporary structures across the annual event. CHISINAU, Moldova – The fifth annual “Orange Music White Night” electronic music extravaganza took place May 17 at the Manej Sport Arena here. It featured headlining DJ Andrew Rayel, a trance music standout. LD Ivasco Stefan (IvasArt) used 20 D.T.S. Raptor fixtures to meet the event’s lighting requirements.

LONDON – Stage Electrics supported The Roof, an elaborate outdoor production produced by Fuel Theatre, with a lighting gear package that included tMartin MAC Viper Performances housed in waterproof, inflatable domes as well as Martin Atomic 3000 Strobes, PAR 64s, Chauvet COLORado LED Pars, Showtec LED ARC Bars, Thomas MR16 battens and JEM ZR44 Smoke Machines, along with a complete rigging & power solution.
