2014 Olivier Award Nominations Announced

LONDON – Presented by the Society of London Theatres, the Olivier Awards honor productions opening in London’s West End. In the lighting category, Paule Constable was nominated for her work on The Light Princess at the National Theatre, Paul Pyant for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Peter Mumford for Ghosts at the Almeida and then the Trafalgar Studios, and Tim Lutkin & Finn Ross for Chimerica at the Almeida and then the Harold Pinter Theatre. Lighting designer Michael Hulls was nominated in the Outstanding Achievement in Dance category for his body of lighting work, including Ballet Boyz – The Talent at Sadler’s Wells.

Big PRG Rig Helps Give BRIT Acts Unique Looks

LONDON — With a big rig for the 2014 BRIT Awards staged at the O2 Arena here Feb. 19, PRG was able to give LD Dave Davey enough firepower and versatility to transform the lighting looks for each of the acts. The artist roster included Artic Monkeys; Beyoncé; Bastille and Rudimental; Pharrell & Nile Rodgers; Ellie Goulding; Katy Perry; Disclosure, Lorde & Aluna George; and Bruno Mars.

TV LDs in Israel Relying on Robe Gear

JERUSALEM – Robe continues to be a popular choice for Israel’s top TV lighting designers. A case in point: LD Ronen Najar’s design for the singing contest show, Rising Star. The rig for the first 24-episode series included Robin MMX Spot and LEDBeam 100 fixtures.  The show was recorded in the Globus Group Studios in Jerusalem and broadcast on national Channel 2.

CCPWA’s Jands Vista L5 Stays Busy on the Road

PERTH, Australia — Concert and Corporate Productions (CCPWA) general manager Sean McKernan noted that their new Jands Vista L5 hit the road soon after it arrived in the company’s warehouse early last fall and hasn’t spent much time in the warehouse between gigs. “We got it mid-September and we only had it in our warehouse for 12 hours before it went out on its first tour,” he said.

UTRECHT, The Netherlands — For “A State of Trance” 650, which drew some 32,000 EDM fans to the Jaarbeurs here Feb. 15, LD André Beekmans used 48 Robe Robin Pointe fixtures and 88 LEDBeam 100s. Flashlight from Utrecht and The Purple Group from Schijndel provided gear for the event.

LONDON — In support of his second album, Shangri-La, Jake Bugg set out on a U.K. tour, including headlining the first Albert Session of 2014 at Royal Albert Hall on Feb. 21, 2014. LD Stuart Farrell worked with PRG’s Scottie Sanderson to clear the logistical hurdles of lighting a wide range of venues, with Vari-Lite, Martin, Sunstrips and I-Pix BB4s supplementing some of the installed rigs.

London Fashion Week Event at Danish Embassy Lit with SGM Gear

LONDON — ‘Re Present,’ a fashion collective of designers with Scandinavian roots, sponsored a London Fashion Week event at the Danish Embassy here lit by LD Søren Peglau.  Peglau used 72 SGM P-5 washlights (recently added to the rental inventory at Hawthorn) and 34 SP-6 SixPack Blinders. Blueprint Event Services also provided nearly 200 SGM LT-200 3D pixel tubes for a chandelier for the main stairwell.

Dry Hire Lighting Stocks Up on Robe Gear

HIGH WYCOMBE, U.K. — Dry Hire Lighting, based here, added more Robe fixtures to its rental inventory, pushing the company’s cross-rental inventory of moving lights toward the 1,000 mark.
