MELBOURNE, Australia — For the musical, King Kong, which has been running at the Regent Theatre here since its opening night on June 15, LD Peter Mumford has used lighting and video to propel the narrative that also includes Global Creature’s 20-foot-high animatronic gorilla. Clay Paky Sharpys are used in new ways for the production — among them, to create architectural grid effects across the stage and also to torment the beast with sharp, bullet-like bursts of light.

JOHANNESBURG — LD Declan Randall opted to use an Eos console for the South African debut of Starlight Express at the Joburg Theatre Complex here. The setup includes an ETC Eos RPU (Remote Processor Unit), which will serve as backup, and ETC’s Net3 Gateways, which run eight DMX universes to support the high fixture count and data distribution required for the show. The desk also utilizes a wireless Ethernet network hub for remote control.

LONDON — For the red carpet premiere of This Is Us, One Direction’s concert film, HSL Lighting provided a lighting rig that included nearly 30 Martin Rush Strobe 5×5 fixtures to add some flash to the daytime event. The premiere took place at Leicester Square here on Aug. 20. The film has since earned more than $62 million worldwide, making it the fourth highest-grossing concert movie to date.

LONDON — Nick Gray of London, UK based creative visual design practice Renegade designed lighting for the main British Fashion Council (BFC) Showspace at London Fashion Week SS14, along with a series of off-site shows featuring Roksanda, L’Wren Scott (pictured here in one of the Gagosian’s gallery spaces), Jasper Conran, Matthew Williamson and Osman.

PRATO, Italy — This Tuscany hotspot may be called Naïf which, in Italian, means “naïve,” but its lighting design is anything but unsophisticated. With a combination of LED moving head fixtures, LED bars, LED strobes and a RED MX desk, the lighting system helps the space transform for uses ranging from dining to disco.

MANCHESTER, U.K. — dbn provided gear and crew for the Ramsbottom Festival 2013, which took place over three days in mid-September. The event, organized by The Met arts center in Bury, was staged in association with Bridgewater Hall at Ramsbottom Cricket Ground near Bury.

GUADALAJARA, Mexico — Procolor, based here, purchased more than 250 new Robe moving light fixtures specified by Belgian LDs Alain Corthout and Ignace d’Haese for the world tour of Mexico’s Alejandro Fernandez. The fixtures include 95 Robe Robin Pointes, 52 LEDWash 600s, 40 LEDWash 300s, 12 LEDWash 1200s and 50 MMX Spots, sourced via Mexican distributor Vari Internacional.
