Techno-based Rotterdam Rave runs 9-10 underground rave events a year which draw in excess of 50,000 visitors. Originally located in old industrial buildings, the sold-out events have grown rapidly in size, and the organisation recently adopted the 8,000-capacity RTM Stage at Rotterdam Ahoy as the newest addition to the Rotterdam Rave territory. Physicists tell us that light makes no sound. That may be technically true, but when a lighting design wraps itself around ferocious metal music and a theatrical stage show to the point where they all merge into one experience, it’s easy to see how fans (and even music critics) can feel that they “heard” the light. Just asked the reviewer who wrote about Avatar’s show at the Manchester Academy during the just-concluded EU-leg of the Swedish metal band’s Dance Devil Dance tour. He described the experience as seeing “bright shafts of musical light passing before your eyes!”
