New Reports on Ottawa Bluesfest Staging Collapse Cite Choice of Fabric Wall Ties as Key Risk Factor

OTTAWA, Canada — Although Ontario Ministry of Labor officials issued a report earlier this year finding no evidence of structural defects that led to the July 18, 2011 collapse of the overhead stage structure during a Cheap Trick performance at the Ottawa Bluesfest, newly-published details cite the crew’s inability to quickly cut ties securing the structure’s fabric walls as a key factor contributing to wind loads on the structure as the storm hit the area.

COPENHAGEN – LD Kasper Lange used a large Martin MAC rig that included Martin Professional’s new MAC Viper Profile for the 2012 Danish Music Awards at the Forum in Copenhagen. “We needed a small and powerful lamp that could cut through the massive audience light,” Lange said. BRISTOL, UK – JLS, UK’s hot boyband, headlined the charity concert for The Mall at Cribbs Causeway’s Christmas Lights switch-on in Bristol earlier this month.  Stage Electrics supplied the fully equipped tunnel stage with complete event lighting. They also supplied and installed a temporary outdoor ice rinks with more than 1000sq m (10,764 sq ft) of real ice.

Robert Juliat Goes to Head of the Class

WALLINGFORD, CT – The University of California at Berkeley and Ithaca College (NY) have added Robert Juliat fixtures to their theatrical lighting inventories. UC Berkeley purchased four Robert Juliat Cyrano followspots from Musson Theatrical. “The user interface is great, all the controls are centralized, and there is pre-focused lamp control.  So they’re easy for the operators to work with day in, day out,” said techician Jeremy Little. Meanwhile, Ithaca College acquired four Buxie followspots from BMI Supply for its Clark Theater. The fixtures fit on their catwalk, and they liked their optical clarity.

PSAV Completes Merger with Swank AV, Retains Execs but Drops Swank Name

NEW YORK and ST. LOUIS, MO — Kelso & Company, the corporate parent to PSAV Presentation Services, reported that its acquisition of Swank Audio Visuals, announced in October, is now complete. Although key personnel from Swank have been retained from the 75-year-old firm, including Greg Diekemper, Swank’s former president and CEO, the Swank name has been dropped in favor of PSAV.

Mojo Barriers Set Record at ‘Made in America’ Fest

PHILADELPHIA – Mojo Barriers US office broke its company record, supplying 800m (2,624 ft) of its aluminum stage barriers to Philadelphia’s Made in America Festival. High levels of traffic and conflicting events meant that Mojo had just 12 hours to complete the build for the Sept. 1-2 event. Barriers were provided across all four stages and other sensitive areas throughout the festival site, which was located in the downtown location of Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The main stage was located in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Passion Pit’s LD Adds Clay Paky on Tour

LITITZ, PA – LD Jason Rothberg has selected six Clay Paky Alpha Spot QWO 800 fixtures from Atomic Lighting for Passion Pit’s current tour. Rothberg, who is also the tour’s lighting programmer, had previous positive experiences with Clay Paky 700 fixtures but calls the 800 units “even better.”  He’s deploying them in a V-shape pyramid of truss towers.
