Apollo Celebrates 20th Anniversary

FORT WAYNE, IN – Apollo Design Technology is celebrating their 20th anniversary as a manufacturer and distributor of custom gobos and other lighting effects. Apollo began in 1992 in the home of Joel and Keersten Nichols, where they made custom gobos. Today, Apollo employs more than 65 people and occupies a 31,000 square-foot facility here.

Philips Selecon SPXs Shine Bright in South African Theatre

PRETORIA, South Africa – The State Theatre has invested in 77 new Philips Selecon SPX luminaires. Philips Entertainment brand partner DWR Distribution supplied the SPX luminaires to local installer Muthiyane Trading. Simon King, Head of Lighting for the Pretoria Theatre, says the fixture’s “crisp white light with no pinkish hues deliver high definition pattern projection as well as the color results our visiting companies expect. The interchangeable lenses also make them ideal for our various versatile venues.”

Chauvet Lights Yanni’s Puerto Rican Performance

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Famous for choosing historic sites for his concerts, Yanni’s most recent concert and DVD recording took place in another majestic location, at Castillo San Felipe del Morro in Puerto Rico. The front wall of the fortress became the central visual attraction for the two-day concert and recording, acting as a background for the stage positioned in front on the grass near the ocean. “The concept was to illuminate the wall of El Morro, as the fort was the main part of the scenography,” said LD Bud Horowitz. Musique Xpress Lights supplied the CHAUVET lighting.

Sonnenfeld to Chair Panel at NATEAC 2012

NEW YORK – Industry veteran Sonny Sonnenfeld has joined the conference panel list for NATEAC 2012, set for the Hilton here July 22-23. Isaac Julian Uses projectiondesign on 9-Screen Art Install

FREDRIKSTAD, Norway – projectiondesign has supplied nine of its F32 DLP projectors to British artist Isaac Julien for his latest art installation ‘Ten Thousand Waves.’ On a worldwide tour, the exhibit landed most recently at the Norwegian Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo. Says Julien,  “When you are putting on a piece of work like this, you rely on a fantastic image. You need a certain color depth, color saturation and depth of field. Contrast ratio is also important. projectiondesign projectors give us all this and more.”

Martin Viper Profile Debuts on Coldplay’s Euro Tour

LONDON – Martin Professional’s new 1000 W MAC Viper Profile debuted on the first European stadium leg of Coldplay’s “Mylo Xyloto” world tour with lighting / production designer Paul Normandale. “The Vipers were used to light the LED screen fascias for which they needed to be bright and have a considerable zoom, which they did well,” Normandale said, adding that he plans to put more Viper Profiles on the rider when the tour returns to Europe in late August. Lighting vendor for the European legs is Lite Alternative while Upstaging is handling the North American leg.

LOS ANGELES – About 90 Clay Paky Sharpy fixtures are on the road for Motley Crue’s North American Summer tour, co-heaadlining with KISS. “I first saw Sharpys at the Ultra Music Fest almost two years ago,” says lighting director Mike Cooper.  “The lighting designer had a huge Clay Paky rig and a row of Sharpys on the stage, and I was blown away.” Since then Cooper has deployed Sharpys on the Godsmack/Staind tour and Motley Crue appearances in Europe.
