Stage Directions has learned of the death of Director Peter Brook on July 2, 2022 at the age of 97, according to his publisher, Nick Hern Books in a statement they released on Twitter: All of us at NHB are very sad to hear of the death of legendary director Peter Brook, at the age of 97. We’re honoured to have been Peter’s publisher for the past twenty years, sharing his wisdom and insights with the world. He leaves behind an incredible artistic legacy. RIP.

New Initiative—The Ruth Foundation for the Arts—Announces Initial Grants

The Ruth Foundation for the Arts (Ruth Arts) has debuted in the landscape of arts philanthropy with the announcement of its inaugural grantmaking cycle. The new foundation is supported by a bequest from the late Ruth DeYoung Kohler II, and expects to award grants totaling more than $17 million annually. The first class of Ruth Arts grantees—an initial round of funding that precedes the regular giving cycles that the organization will embark upon later this year—includes 78 nonprofit arts organizations that have been awarded a total of $1.25 million in funding. Since the iconic TKTS by TDF Booth in Times Square reopened on September 14, 2021, they have resumed their role as the go-to destination for same-day evening (and next day matinee) discount tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. The Shubert Foundation Gives Record $37.6 Million to 609 Arts Organizations Nationwide

The Shubert Foundation announced a record $37.6 million in unrestricted grants to not-for-profit theaters, dance companies, academic theater training programs, and related service agencies. The Theatrical Sound Designers and Composers Association (TSDCA) Announces their Seventh Annual Meeting

The Theatrical Sound Designers and Composers Association (TSDCA) announced their seventh annual membership meeting, being held in person for the first time in three years. On June 25 – 27, 2022, TSDCA will hold three days of public panels and discussions regarding sound design and composition in theater at the Marjorie Barrick Museum Of Art on the campus of University Of Las Vegas – Nevada. All events are free and open to TSDCA members as well as the general public. Norwegian Theatre Invests in ESPRITES

Det Norske Teatret (the Norwegian Theatre) in Oslo houses three stages in its main building in downtown Oslo, plus one more in another venue in the city run by the same team, all of which work on a busy repertory schedule. Together at least 25 original and cutting-edge productions are created annually, in the Norwegian language of Nynorsk, and host some guest works as well. Roshunda Jones-Koumba Receives the 2022 Excellence in Theatre Education Award

The Tony Awards and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) awarded drama teacher Roshunda Jones-Koumba of G. W. Carver Magnet High School in Houston, TX the 2022 Excellence in Theatre Education Award.  Jones-Koumba received her award at the 75th Annual Tony Awards on Sunday, June 12, at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. 2022 Drama Desk Awards Winners Announced

Winners of the 66th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced on June 8, 2022. Below is a list of the design winners along with the shows. We at PLSN and Stage Directions in PLSN send our congratulations to all of the design honorees as well as to all of the nominated designers for their outstanding work this season!

In keeping with the Drama Desk’s mission, the nominators considered shows that opened on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway during the 2021-2022 New York theater season, that the Drama Desk determined ended as of May 1, 2022.
