Some beautiful design work was nominated for the 76th Annual TONY Awards this year and selecting winners was surely a difficult task. However, winners were indeed announced at the celebration of Broadway’s incredible season of work. Here is the list of the Tony Award worthy designs for 2023 with the winners highlighted.
In partnership with dry-hire rental house Main Light, Elation Professional provided Fuze MAX™ series moving head luminaires to David Geffen School of Drama at Yale for use on the school’s annual Carlotta Festival, which showcases plays written, directed, acted and designed by students. The Carlotta Festival features three fully produced new plays by graduating playwrights performed in rotating repertory. The plays presented in this year’s festival, which ran May 5–12 at the Iseman Theatre, included littleboy/littleman by Rudi Goblen (directed by Jacob Basri); Furlough’s Paradise by a.k. payne (directed by Leyla Levi); and Color Boy by Esperanza Rosales Balcárcel (directed by Jecamiah M. On May 31, 2023 the winners for the 67th Annual Drama Desk Awards were announced. In keeping with the Drama Desk‘s mission, the nominators considered shows that opened on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway during the 2022-2023 season for this year’s awards. Among the winners are Life of Pi designers: Tim Hatley for Lighting and Andrzej Goulding for Projection and Video. USITT will be held in Seattle for 2024, taking place March 20-23, 2024. USITT’s mission is to connect performing arts, design, and technology communities to ensure a vibrant dialog among practitioners, educators, and students. USITT invites people to submit an education session proposal for presentation at USITT in Seattle.
The WGA has made a statement that they will not picket the Tony Awards, thus clearing the way for the Broadway celebration to be broadcast live on June 11, 2023, with some adjustments. The ‘no picket line’ assurance means that members of other unions will now be able to attend and work the Tony Awards without crossing a WGA picket line.
