Bob Dylan Hits the Road with TMS and Philips Vari-Lite

NEW YORK – There was no "flash" or intense light movement, no lasers or pyro, and even the light that was used was mostly just plain white. But a variety of venues and delicate white-light transitions, the Bob Dylan Fall Tour still had its share of lighting design challenges. TMS supported the tour with 35 Vari*Lite luminaires. In the absence of changing colors, color temperatures rose in importance, and because the tour traveled from arenas to outdoor festivals, the crew needed fixtures that offered a broad zoom range and intensities that could be adjusted for the different throw distances.  Shuttering capabilities were also important, used to adjust to the many different angles required in the varying spaces.

All the production elements for the tour – lighting, sound and video – also had to stay balanced so that one element would not overwhelm the others. These and other factors led to the choice of 21 VL3000 Spots, six VL3500 Wash fixtures and eight VL3500 Spots.

The VL3000 Spot luminaires were used for keylighting the band, gobo breakups to give the design texture, and for the zoom range that was needed to ensure the band was properly lit from a variety of distances.

The VL3500 Wash luminaires were used as backlight on the band with warm color temperatures, and if needed, they could also provide a bump in intensity to adjust the general stage wash brightness.

The VL3500 Spot luminaires, meanwhile, provided four-plane shuttering capabilities to adjust for the tight corners and awkward angles.
