LOS ANGELES – Theatrical Media Services recommended Elation Professional's Design Wash LED Pro fixtures to DMB lighting designer Fenton Williams and programmer Aaron Stinebrink. Sixteen of the compact and energy-efficient fixtures are now part of the touring rig.
With 11.6 million tickets sold between 2000 and 2009, the Dave Matthews Band ranked as the top-selling tour of the decade, with part of the appeal coming from the artists' support for the environment and for disaster relief.
So when it came to the decision of which lighting fixtures to use for DMB's latest tour, the energy efficiency of was part of the reason TMS made the recommendation for using the Elation gear.
The Dave Matthews Band was an early adopter of LED lighting technology, but another key factor for Stinebrink was the fixture's size. At 17.2 inches by 13 inches by 8.6 inches, the Design Wash LED Pros are small enough to work as color-changing toners for the tour's 20.5-inch truss.
Rated for 50,000 hours of use and equipped with 108 3W Rebel LEDs (52 red, 22 green, 22 blue and 12 white), the fixtures can produce any color the designers want to use, and their 3-phase motors offer speedy pan (630° or 540°) and tilt (265°).
Other features include a built-in EWDMX receiver for wireless DMX; a 98-240v multi-voltage internal power supply; and a 15° lens that produces a 9° beam angle effect and a 23° field angle.
"The Design Wash LED Pro has been a great addition to our tour lighting package," Stinebrink said. "Their speed, durability, size and price make them an ideal fixture for large and small touring applications – the perfect fit for our touring needs."
